INCONTRO BILATERALE  ICBIE - ESCOLA ARTE E LAVORO DE MATA ESCURA

Quando l´ICBIE stava cercando artisti di strada (Artistas de Rua o Street Artists) per realizzare il Mosaico delle Muse lungo il muro del Casarao, all’altezza della Biblioteca Leonardo da Vinci, abbiamo avuto indicazioni a propósito di una Associazione nel quartiere di Mata Escura, “Escola Arte e Lavoro”, guidata da un architetto e artista  italiano, Roberto Corradini. L´Associazione é specializzata in esecuzioni di mosaici, sculture e ceramiche. Quando abbiamo preso contatto con loro, il nostro insegnante di disegno Geisiel Gomes Ramos  aveva giá proposto di fare con i nostri ragazzi dell’ICBIE un piccolo mosaico di prova nel muro bianco dei bagni esterni. E abbiamo scoperto che è bravissimo in questa difficile tecnica artistica. Poi parlando con Roberto dell´iniziativa di  Geisiel…. sorpresa!, siamo venuti a sapere che lui si era formato proprio alla “Escola Arte e Lavoro” di Mata Escura  (un quartiere poverissimo subito dopo Pirajà), diretta, appunto, dall’arch. Roberto Corradini, Vanderlei di Minas Gerais e Luis detto SCaravaggio per le sue grandi doti di riprodurre quadri famosi.

Abbiamo subito invitato i rappresentanti di questa scuola all’ICBIE: sono rimasti impressionati dal nostro lavoro e hanno detto che tutto è molto simile alla loro scuola: anche essa nata nel 2006, ha problemi economici ma soprattutto di personale che si prenda le responsabilità o che abbia un minimo di senso dell’iniziativa. Per ora sono solo tre o quattro persone che fanno muovere circa un centinaio di ragazzi da 7 a 20 anni organizzandoli nei tre corsi principali (mosaico, scultura e ceramica) in un grande spazio di proprietà delle suore del Belgio a cui pagano l’affitto di 2200 Reais al mese (1000 Euro).

Una seconda volta hanno visitato l’ICBIE insieme a Roberto, Vanderlei mineiro e Luis Scaravaggio, anche l’arch. di Trento  Chiara Zanolini che per Escola Arte e Lavoro ha fatto e fa domande di sovvenzioni e progetti di restauro di mosaici sacri alla regione Trentino e Diana Floriani di Arco città davanti a Riva del Garda, che il nostro Alberto Maganzini forse conoscerà.

La nostra visita, mia e di Marlene, è avvenuta alcuni giorni fa e, attraversando questa periferia scoraggiante e brulicante di persone semplici, povere ma allegre, siamo finiti davanti alle mura mosaicate in maniera davvero professionale del Convento delle suore e dall’altra parte lo spazio, i laboratori e il palazzetto quasi nuovo ma già rovianto (ci piove dentro) dell’Escola Arte e Lavoro. Dopo un pranzo delizioso cucinato da Roberto, un altro amante come me della cucina, abbiamo cominciato a percorrere le varie classi e siamo rimasti davvero impressionati dalla vivacità dei ragazzi, dai loro lavori, dagli insegnanti preparati e pazienti, dalle tecniche usate e dalla quantità di prodotti pronti per essere venduti a Bahia, in Brasile ma anche in Italia dove ci sono buoni agganci a Milano e come si è detto a Trento.

La conclusione di questo incontro bilaterale in cui si sono discussi i vari problemi che viviamo in comune e anche le soddisfazioni avute per tanti alunni che ora hanno lavoro e viaggiano per il Brasile e vendono le loro opere o insegnano a crearle, è la volontà di consolidare la nostra conoscenza reciproca  per un eventuale partenariato (parceria) o collaborazione per impiantare un corso di mosaico o ceramica qui da noi e noi offrire viceversa un corso di inglese o graffiti o informatica nella loro scuola… è tutto ancora da studiare, proporre, organizzare, capire e decidere. ENCONTRO BILATERAL ICBIE - ESCOLA ARTE E LAVORO DE MATA ESCURA

Quando o ICBIE estava procurando artistas de rua (Street Artists) para realizar o “Mosaico delle Muse” no muro do casarão, na altura da Biblioteca Leonardo da Vinci, nós ficamos sabendo de uma Associação no bairro da Mata Escura, “Escola Arte e Lavoro”, dirigida pelo arquiteto e artista italiano, Roberto Corradini. A Associação é especializada na realização de mosaicos, esculturas e cerâmicas. Enquanto entrávamos em contato com eles, o nosso professor de desenho, Geisiel Gomes Ramos, propunha fazer com os nossos alunos do ICBIE um pequeno mosaico como teste no muro branco perto dos banheiros externos do Instituto.  Dessa maneira descobrimos a sua habilidade com essa complexa técnica artística. Depois falei com Roberto, presidente da Associação, sobre iniciativa do Geisiel e… surpresa!!!!! Nós descobrimos que o Geisiel se formou na mesma “Escola Arte e Lavoro” de Mata Escura (um bairro muito pobre perto de Pirajá), dirigida, precisamente, pelo arquiteto Roberto Corradini, Vanderlei de Minas Gerais e Luis, chamado “Scaravaggio” pela suas grandes capacidades de reproduzir telas famosas.

Logo convidamos os representantes dessa Escola no ICBIE: eles ficaram impressionados com o nosso trabalho e falaram que é tudo muito similar com a Escola deles: ela nasceu no ano 2006, tem problemas econômicos e, sobretudo, de pessoal que tome a responsabilidade e as iniciativas. No momento são apenas três ou quatros pessoas que movem uma média de 100 jovens entre 7 e 20 anos de idade, organizando-os entre os três principais cursos (mosaico, escultura e cerâmica) num grande espaço, propriedade das freiras belgas, pelo qual eles pagam um aluguel de 2200 reais ao mês (1000 euro).

Na segunda vez que eles visitaram o ICBIE junto com Roberto, Vanderlei, o mineiro, e Luis Scaravaggio, também o arquiteto de Trento Chiara Zanolini, que fez e esta fazendo pedidos de concessão e projetos de restauração de mosaicos sagrados na região Trentino para a “Escola Arte e Lavoro”, e Diana Floriani de Arco cidade em frente de Riva Del Garda e que o nosso Alberto Maganzini talvez conheça.

Na nossa visita, minha e de Marlene, aconteceu há alguns dias atrás e, passando através dessa periferia desanimadora e cheia de pessoas simples, pobres, mas alegras, chegamos enfrente dos muros, onde estão os mosaicos, e percebemos que eram feitos de maneira muito profissional. Do outro lado estavam os laboratórios e o pequeno prédio, quase novo, mas já estragado (chove dentro), da “Escola Arte e Lavoro”.   Depois do delicioso almoço preparado por Roberto, outro amante como eu da cozinha, nós começamos a visitar as aulas e ficamos impressionados de verdade com a vivacidade dos alunos, com os trabalhos deles, com os professores preparados e pacientes, com as técnicas utilizadas e com a quantidade de produtos prontos para serem vendidos na Bahia, no Brasil e também na Itália, onde existem bons contatos com Milão e com Trento.

A conclusão desse nosso encontro bilateral, no qual nós discutimos os diversos problemas em comum e das satisfações recebidas, porque muitos alunos agora trabalham e viajem no Brasil e vendem as suas obras ou ensinam como      produzi-las, é a vontade de consolidar o nosso conhecimento para uma eventual parceria ou colaboração na organização de um curso de mosaico ou cerâmica aqui no ICBIE, e oferecer-lhes, em troca, um curso de inglês, grafite ou informática na Escola deles… Tudo ainda precisa ser estudado, proposto, organizado, entendido e decidido. Vamos torcer para que tudo dê certo!

When the ICBIE was looking for street artists to execute the Mosaic of the Muses along the outside wall of the Casarão, at the level of the Leonardo da Vinci Library, we heard about an association in the Mata Escura district, “Escola Arte e Lavoro,” led by an Italian architect and artist, Roberto Corradini, that specializes in the production of mosaics, sculpture and ceramics.  When we got in touch with them, our drawing teacher Geisiel Gomes Ramos had already proposed to have our kids at the ICBIE make a trial mosaic on the white walls of the outdoors bathrooms, and we discovered that he was really good at this difficult artistic technique.   Then when we told Roberto about Geisiel’s project… surprise!, we discovered that he had studied at this very same “Escola Arte e Lavoro” in Mata Escura  (an extremely poor area just beyond Pirajà), which Roberto directs along with Vanderlei from Minas Gerais and Luis, also known as SCaravaggio, for his great talent in replicating famous paintings.

We immediately invited them to visit the ICBIE: they were dumbfounded by our work, saying that it is just like their school, which was also founded in 2006 and has the same problems with funding and especially with finding capable personnel who take on responsibility and have at least a minimum sense of initiative.  For now they have just three or four people who take care of about a hundred kids from seven to twenty years old, split between the three principal courses (mosaics, sculpture and ceramics), which are held in a big building that belongs to Belgian nuns, with a rent of R$ 2200 ($1300) per month.

On their second visit to the ICBIE, Roberto, Vanderlei and Luis Scaravaggio brought along an architect from Trento, Chiara Zanolini, who is helping the Escola Arte e Lavoro to make requests for grants and projects for the restoration of sacred mosaics in the Trentino region of Italy, and Diana Floriani, from Arco, a town near to Riva del Garda that perhaps our friend Alberto Maganzini is familiar with.Our visit, by Marlene and me, came a couple days ago, and we journeyed through that desolate periphery, teeming with simple people, poor but happy, until we arrived in front of the walls, covered in very professional looking mosaics, that run from the nun’s convent to another area with the laboratories and the nearly new little building (but which is already dilapidated from its leaky roof) of the Escola Arte e Lavoro.  After a delicious meal prepared by Roberto, another kindred soul who, like me, loves to cook, we set off to visit the various classes and we were struck by the vivaciousness of the kids, by their work, by the fine and patient teachers, the techniques they used and above all by the sheer quantity of artworks that they had produced, all ready to be sold in Bahia, in Brazil but also in Italy where they have good connections in Milan, as well as in Trento.

During this intense bilateral summit we discussed the various problems that we both suffer, but we also talked about the satisfaction that we both have received from so many students that now have work and travel around Brazil selling their works or teaching others to create them.  We concluded with a desire to consolidate our shared experiences in an eventual partnership (parceria) or collaboration, to set up a mosaics or ceramics course here at the ICBIE, while we offer a course in English or graffiti or computer science at their school… the rest will come with a bit of studying, proposing, organizing, understanding and deciding.  Let’s hope for the best.

SOSTEGNO ALLA BANDA PALAFITAS

Grazie alla donazione che la nostra grande Monica Bernardi ha raccolto in occasione del Battesimo di Diego - suo figlio nonché mascotte ICBIE - siamo riusciti a dare un piccolo aiuto economico alla Banda Palafitas di Mestre Caica.

La Banda é composta da ragazzini che vivono nel quartiere di Massaranduba, quartiere favelato a poca distanza dall´ICBIE a Ribeira.Il gruppo non ha una sede ma il loro luogo é la strada dove i componenti della banda prendono lezioni di percussioni da Mestre Caica e dove si esibiscono ben volentieri ed in ogni occasione buona. Mestre Caica pur nelle costanti difficoltá economiche riesce a fare un ottimo lavoro insegnando ai ragazzini l´amore per la musica e dando loro una buona occasione per stare lontani dalle “cattive tentazioni” di cui é ricco il luogo dove vivono.

Tutta la Banda Palafitas ed in particolare Mestre Caica mandano, per tanto, un sentito ringraziamento ed un energico tocco di batucada brasiliana a MONICA e DIEGO!!!!

Thanks to the donation that our great Monica Bernardi collected during the baptism of Diego—her son and also the ICBIE mascot—, we were able to give a little bit of economic help to the Banda Palafitas (Stilt-House Band) of Mestre Caica.

The band is made up of little kids who live in the economically-challenged Massaranduba district, which is not far from the ICBIE in Ribeira.  The group doesn’t have a place to meet, so their natural place is in the street, where the various components of the band get percussion lessons from Mestre Caica, and where they are always happy to play, at every opportunity.  Mestre Caica, despite his constant economic troubles, nonetheless manages to do his best, teaching the kids to love music while keeping them away from the many “bad temptations” that the the area where they live is famous for.

The entire Stilt-House Band and in particular Mestre Caica send their heartfelt gratitude and an energetic groove of Brazilian batucada to MONICA and DIEGO!!!!

One of this year’s finest Brazilian films will be shown at tomorrow’s ICBIE Cineforum.  Based upon a 1959 short story by Jorge Amado, the film is set in the city of Salvador and recounts a surreal story about a man who dies quietly in bed and then his friends decide to take him to a wild party with lots of drinking, so he can die a second time, in a more exciting way.  The title of the film, Quincas Berro D’água, has been translated literally into English, even though it sounds ridiculous, but uses the longer title of Amado’s book: The Two Deaths of Quincas Wateryell (A Morte e a Morte de Quincas Berro D’água).  As a special attraction, one of the actors in the film will be present at the projection!

Salvador. Quincas (Paulo José) é um funcionário público cansado da vida que leva. Um dia ele resolve deixar sua família de lado e cair na farra, ganhando fama como Quincas Berro D’Água, o rei dos vagabundos. Quando ele é encontrado morto em seu quarto, sua família resolve apagar os vestígios de sua fase arruaceira e lhe dar um enterro respeitável. Só que seus amigos surgem no local e decidem levá-lo para uma última farra.

Entrada franca com direito a pipoca!!!

Our Institute survives only with solid support from abroad. Without the help that we receive from ARCI, for example, we would not have had the resources to build and operate our computer lab and, thanks to the generosity of the American Overseas School of Rome, we can offer Geisiel’s immensely successful drawing courses. In order to gather our forces in Italy, ICBIE Europe was founded as an official Italian NGO, and as soon as the Italian government gets around to paying our 0.5% share of our friends’ tax returns, we will have a solid font of income.

For the last four years, we have attempted to coerce our American friends to create a parallel NGO in the United States, but, until now, the formidable bureaucratic obstacles of such a venture proved to be stronger than the resolve of our supporters. This has caused us to lose important donations, because in the States people expect to write them off on their taxes, and without a registered organization, that is impossible.

Thankfully, last spring the ICBIE’s proverbial good luck kicked in. Out of the blue, an amazing email from an AOSR graduate (Class of 2001) named Ariell Kirylo announced her intention of founding an American NGO to support the ICBIE. From that moment, she has raced forward, sprinting over all the legal hurdles in record time, forming a Board of Trustees, registering her new organization in Alexandria, Virginia and completing the paperwork as an official 501(c)3. Through this complicated process she was guided by her mentor, Gety Mpanu-Mpanu, a native of the Democratic Republic of Congo and former chairman of the Organization NDWENGA for the Education of the People (ONEP) (http://csndwenga.org/), working in Kinshasa, who graciously consented to join with Ariell, taking on the chairmanship of the new organization, IMA Generation (www.imageneration.org).

IMA (which stands for “Inspire, Motivate, Act”) has for mission “to make schools in poverty-stricken regions of the world the source of social, cultural and economic growth for their local communities” and will begin by supporting ICBIE and NDWENGA, as well as initiating an exciting program of youth activities in Alexandria. E alla fine, uno stretto legame con gli U.S.A.

Il nostro Istituto sopravvive solo grazie al consolidato sostegno dall’estero.  Senza l’aiuto che riceviamo dall´ARCI, per esempio, non avremmo avuto le risorse per la creazione ed il funzionamento del nostro laboratorio di informatica e, grazie alla generosità dell’American Overseas School of Rome, non avremmo realizzato il corso di disegno di Geisiel che ha riscosso tanto successo. Per accrescere le nostre forze in Italia, l’ICBIE Europa è diventata una ONG ufficiale e appena il governo italiano libererà il pagamento del nostro 0,5% delle dichiarazioni dei redditi dei nostri amici, avremo una solida fonte di guadagno.

Negli ultimi quattro anni, abbiamo cercato di convincere i nostri amici americani a creare una ONG parallela negli USA, ma, fin ora, i formidabili ostacoli burocratici di una símile impresa si sono rivelati più forti della volontà dei nostri sostenitori. Tutto ció ci ha costretti a perdere donazioni sostanziose, perché negli USA le persone sono abituate a dedurre dalle tasse le donazioni effettuate, ma senza una organizzazione ufficialmente registrata, questo non è possibile.

Fortunatamente, la scorsa primavera la proverbiale fortuna dell´ICBIE è arrivata. E’ piombato dal cielo una stupefacente mail di una alunna formatasi alla AOSR (classe 2001), di nome Ariell Kirylo, che annunciava la sua intenzione di fondare una ONG Americana per sostenere l’ICBIE. Da quel momento, Ariell ha cominciato la sua corsa, superando tutti gli ostacoli giuridici a tempo di record, costituendo um Consiglio di Amministrazione, registrando la sua nuova organizzazione ad Alexandria, Virginia e completando la prattica per diventare un ufficiale ente 501(c)3 non-profit per le tasse americane. Ariell è stata sostenuta, attraverso questo complicato processo, dal suo mentore, Gety Mpanu-Mpanu, nativo della Repubblica Democratica del Congo, presidente dell’Organizzazione NDWENGA per l´Educazione delle Popolazioni (ONEP), (http://csndwenga.org/), che ha lavorato a Kinshasa e che ha gentilmente acconsentito a unirsi ad Ariell, assumendo la presidenza della nuova organizzazione, IMA Generation (www.imageneration.org).

O nosso Instituto sobrevive só graças ao forte suporte do exterior. Aspettando l´arrivo della nostra nuova insegnante di inglese, Miriam Murphy, ancora un´altra volontaria proveniente dalla “American Overseas School of Rome”, l´ICBIE apre le iscrizioni per i corsi di inglese. Le lezioni si svolgeranno secondo il seguente calendario

While we await the arrival of our new English teacher, Miriam Murphy (yet another volunteer from the “American Overseas School of Rome”), the ICBIE is opening registration for her English courses.  The lessons are planned as follows:

COURSE: BASIC ENGLISH

• Tuesdays and Thursdays: Morning session (from 9:30 - 11 AM)
• Afternoon session (from 4 - 5:30 PM)
• Evening session (from 7:30-9 PM)

COURSE: CONVERSATION

• Saturdays: Morning session only (from 9:30-11 AM)

DURATION OF THE COURSES:  Begins October 9th and ends December 4th, 2010.

Along with Miriam’s new classes, the lessons that our dear Mary Overby began in August will continue.  We hope for lots of new participants!!!!

Tonight’s Cineforum will present a farcical German film that focuses on the changes in East Germany after the fall of Communism through the story of a fervent hardliner who has a heart attack after seeing her son participating in protest demonstration.  She falls into a coma, waking up only after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the doctors advise her family to avoid exciting her, so they have to pretend that the old regime is still in power, while she recovers.

And thankfully, for once, this film title translates faithfully in Italian, Portuguese and English1!

Um pouco sobre o filme…A mãe de Alexander, fiel devota do socialismo na antiga Alemanha Oriental, tem um ataque cardíaco ao ver o filho em uma passeata contra o sistema vigente. Quando ela acorda do coma, após a queda do muro de Berlim, o médico aconselha a Alexander que ela evite emoções fortes, pois outro ataque tão cedo seria fatal. Com o peso na consciência pelo estado atual de sua mãe, Alex faz de tudo para que ela continue vivendo em uma ilusória Alemanha socialista, mudando embalagens de produtos industrializados e até mesmo inventando documentários televisivos para preencher as brechas do dia-a-dia do recente capitalismo no país.

A dramatic moment in recent Brazilian history is the backdrop for tonight’s film, which also has different names, depending on the language version.  In Portuguese, it’s O que é isso companheiro? (”What is it, Comrade”), while in English it goes by Four Days in September, which is translates consistently in its Italian title, 4 giorni a settembre.  Go figure.

Um pouco sobre o filme…Em 1964, um golpe militar derruba o governo democrático brasileiro e, após alguns anos de manifestações políticas, é promulgado em dezembro de 1968 o Ato Constitucional nº 5, que nada mais era que o golpe dentro do golpe, pois acabava com a liberdade de imprensa e os direitos civis. Neste período vários estudantes abraçam a luta armada, entrando na clandestinidade, e em 1969 militantes do MR-8 elaboram um plano para seqüestrar o embaixador dos Estados Unidos (Alan Arkin) para trocá-lo por prisioneiros políticos, que eram torturados nos porões da ditadura.

PALESTRA “USO SUSTENTAVEL DOS RECURSOS NATURAIS” – 4 SETTEMBRE 2010

L´incontro di sabato scorso, 4 settembre, realizzato all´ICBIE sul tema “Uso sostenibile delle risorse naturali” é stato aperto da una piccola rappresentazione teatrale della Compagnia Piccola Cia de Teatro dell´ICBIE. I nostri giovanissimi attori, sotto la direzione di Meg, hanno messo in scena un divertente pezzo sul tema ambientale, facendo ridere e sorridere i presenti ma lasciando, anche, un importante messaggio di sensibilizzazione verso la necessitá di preservare e rispettare la natura.

Dopo il teatro ha preso la parola Marcella Sgura – volontaria italiana formata in Scienze Ambientali -  introducendo al pubblico un video del progetto “The story of stuff project” (http://www.storyofstuff.com/) nella versione portoghese. Il video richiama l´attenzione sull´origine delle cose che usiamo quotidianamente e sul nostro sistema economico basato sulla produzione industriale e sul continuo incremento del consumo da parte della popolazione mondiale dimostrando come ci troviamo in un sistema “in crisi”. Dopo 20 minuti di proiezione é inziato un interessante dialogo e confronto sul tema tra i numerosi presenti. Il pubblico si é dimostrato molto recettivo all´argomento e ci ha stimolati nel pensare di realizzare altri incontri sul tema, magari piú orientati su officine pratiche di riciclaggio sempre al fine di dimostrare che ognuno puó fare la sua parte nella preservazione dell´ambiente e delle risorse naturali.

“SUSTAINABLE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES” — LECTURE ON SEPTEMBER 4th 2010

The meeting last Saturday, September 4th at the ICBIE on the theme “The sustainable use of natural resources” opened with a short theater show by the Little Theater Company of the ICBIE.  Our young actors, under the direction of Meg, put on a lively piece based on environmental themes, inspiring laughter and smiles from all present, but leaving as well an important message regarding the need to preserve and respect nature.

After the play, Marcella Sgura, our Italian volunteer with  a background in Environmental Sciences, introduced to the public a video from “The Story of Stuff Project”(http://www.storyofstuff.com/) in the Portuguese version.  The video draws our attention to the origin of the things that we use every day and their impact on our economic system, which is based on industrial production and on the continuous growth of consumer goods by the world population, showing how we are are now in a system in crisis.  After the twenty minutes of the projection an interesting dialog began, confronting the theme among the numerous spectators.  The public was very open to the argument and it encouraged us to realize other encounters on this theme, hopefully more oriented upon practical workshops for recycling, always with the goal of demonstrating that everyone can do his or her part in the conservation of the environment and of our natural resources.

CORSO DI DISEGNO II SEMESTRE 2010 CON IL SOSTEGNO DELLA AOS DI ROMA

Il II semestre del corso di disegno di osservazione conta un grande successo di iscritti. Il nostro valido insegnante Geisiel oltre a continuare le sue lezioni con i vecchi alunni – sempre piú talentuosi -  ogni sabato mattina insegna l´arte del disegno ad un´aula di circa 22 nuovi allievi.

Dare continuitá ad un corso che riscuote tanto successo presso la comunitá Itapagipana (e non solo) é stato possibile grazie anche al  sostegno econômico della American Overseas School of Rome (Italia) (www.aosr.org). La scuola con le sue donazioni e con l´invio di insegnanti volontari a Salvador, da anni sostiene l´ICBIE nella realizzazione delle sue diverse attivitá.

SECOND SEMESTER 2010 DRAWING COURSE, WITH THE SUPPORT OF AOSR

The second semester of the observational drawing class has enjoyed a boom in enrollment.  Our talented instructor Geisiel, besides continuing his lessons with his old students — who are showing more talent all the time — is also adding a course in the art of drawing on Saturday mornings, with a class of about 22 students.

To give continuity to a course that has enjoyed so much success with the community of the Itapagipe peninsula (and beyond) has been possible thanks to economic support from the American Overseas School of Rome (Italy) (www.aosr.org).  With its donations and the volunteer teachers that it has sent, for years the school has supported the ICBIE, helping us to realize many different activities.
