ICBIE Berlin Wall Anniversary Celebrations

Berlin Wall Poster

(English translation below)

—————

It’s down to the final sprint at the ICBIE, in preparation for the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

During his last trip to Europe, Pietro Gallina made a point of visiting Gesa Chomé and visited the East Side Gallery, where he got the idea of an event to celebrate and underline the historical and cultural significance of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Despite its importance as a signifying moment in post-Cold War European history, for South Americans, the fall of the wall between East and West Germany is not a particularly important event for them, as it does not directly correlate with the history of this continent.

This event, therefore, intends to build an understanding and a political awareness that can explain the symbolic value that the fall of the wall holds today, for everyone.

Not only was it the end of a political division and the end of a historical period: the fall of the “wall” can also mean the end of every kind of division, whether it be cultural, social, racial, religious or merely a way of thinking.

The message that we intend to launch is that there are many “walls” in the world, not only physical ones, but also and above all, virtual ones.

The event is organized in three different parts: the photographic exhibition “The Berlin Wall, Now and Then” by Gesa Chomé, the collective exposition of various local and international artists, both to be held at the ICBIE, and a closing event with the painting and symbolic destruction of a wall (a mock replica of the Berlin Wall), constructed for the occasion in plaster in the historic center of Salvador (Pelourinho).

All three parts of the event will be characterized by the free artistic expression of the participants, and it begins tomorrow with the inauguration of the photo exhibition, for which we also thought to dedicate a moment to our graffiti artists, who can use the interior walls of the future ICBIE theater.  If they can’t get ready by tomorrow, they’ll do it at the inauguration of the collective exposition on the 3rd of November, and anyway on the 10th of November at Pelourinho Square there will be room for everyone, so that everybody can express his or her idea of the “wall.”

Paranaguà’s Report on the Uruguai Mutirão

Social Graffiti Happening in Uruguai
Good day, dear friends!  The Third Social Graffiti Happening was planned as a commemorative party with plenty of colors, happiness and entertainment for young children.  It was opened by the master of ceremonies and director of the Oficina de Rua Project Júlio Costa, last Saturday (17), recalling the glory days of the old Cine Teatro do Uruguai.  This site now functions as the seat of the Associação dos Capoeiristas Filho do Sol Nascente ACFSN, under the direction of Mestre Pedro Pé de Ferro, who, together with his sons and daughters, has developed an excellent model of social work for children and youths in the neighborhood.

During the day, various activities took place, with the participation of little kids, teenagers, dads, friends, artists, and guests.  The crowd was entranced by tricks and games, lessons, a chicken stuffed with candies, the magic stories of Tiago and his son Iago; the Indian dance with Sabika and Talita, the daughter of Mônica and Pinel; as well as the theater piece “The Magic Book,” with the young ICBIE actors, among other things.

Hot-dogs and porridge
What could be better at a children’s party than to be served a good old hotdog (or “cachorro-quente”) and a cold drink? Another big success was the tasty porridge from Minas Gerais made with white corn stewed with toasted peanuts (a recipe of Professor Marlene), prepared by the legendary Lu.

The Power of Colors
The graffiti artists, armed with spraycans, rollers and brushes, together with all the kids and swinging to the rhythm of Black music and hooked on the sonic overdrive of Hip-Hop Baga e Nouve music, under the command of DJ Olivier Sibel, transformed the area into a permanent exposition of their artworks (portraits, tags, styles, bombs, mixed media, ideas, figurative elements, etc.) that covered all four walls of the ACFSN center.

A list of those present at the event: Gardenal and Mama (MC´s), With, Prisk, Bigod (oficina de grafite professor), Sank25, Ral, Gringo, Acme, Sins, Xluts, TárcioV, Covero, Samuca, Kesh, Taizo, Fusca, Kura, Spam, Xkátia, Baga, Nouve, Did, Pinel, Mônica, Slam (photographer), Kleber84, Professor Augusto and his family, Marcella Sgura, Lucidalva (Lu), Val, Jorge and his crew (Som Laser), Sabika, Tess, Carina Dammelmeyer, Stefano Barbi (film-maker), students of the workshops, and others.

Oficina de Rua - Title YouTube

Of all the wonderful developments that have animated the ICBIE and that have made 2009 a truly amazing year for us, the Oficine de Rua Project tops them all.  With concrete support from the Emilia Romagna region in Italy and the City of Salvador,  it has brought the first public financing of our work, permitting an expansion of ICBIE programs and, importantly, an opportunity for our veteran students to assume roles of responsibility, as shown by the marvellous work of Júlio Costa, the director of the Project.

It seemed a pity to have this wonderful story, complete with its rich collection of gorgeous photos, languish amidst the back pages of this blog, so I threw together an iMovie presentation that traces the proper sequence of events up until now.  Please share it with your friends and spread this great story far and wide!

An ICBIE Event Honoring Indigenous Cultures in Brazil

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Amazonia in movement

Amazonia on the Move

On Saturday, October 24th, the ICBIE will host a projection of the video “Amazonia on the Move - Belem Social Forum 2009.”  The video will be accompanied by a debate with Juvenal Payaya, a discendent of the Payaya tribe and a representative of indigenous culture in the Brazil of today.

As the subject will be the Amazon region and its indigenous cultures, the occasion will be an opportunity to build in our community an awareness of the social, historical and cultural value that the indigenous cultures have had in the past and maintain to the present day.  Unfortunately, indigenous traditions run the risk of losing out and vanishing from the country’s memory, because they are often undervalued if not completely ignored, not only by the institutions but by the civil society in general.  With this event we wish to contribute, in our own  small way, so that this process does not become irreversible.  We are hoping for a big crowd, so that an interesting and lively debate will arise on this important subject.

Of course we thank the authors Paolo Grassini and Federico Mariani for giving us the video before its official release and for giving us permission for this showing.  A big salute to both of them.

Italian Language in the World Meeting

On Tuesday October 20th began the Italian Language in the World Week, and while our President participated in the celebration in New York, the ICBIE participated in the opening day here in Salvador, which was held at the Department of Letters of the Federal University (UFBA).   Representing the ICBIE were Marlene (who was naturally invited to sit at the big shots’ table), Marcella, Lhais and Meg, in the role of ideal examples of Italian language students.  This year the theme of the week is “Italian between art, science and technology,” in honor of the 4ooth anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s discoveries and the hundredth anniversary of the Futurist Manifesto.

Present on Tuesday, among others, were:  Mauro Porru, Director of the Department of Romance Languages at the Faculty of Letters at the UFBA;  Giovanni Pisanu, Vice Consul of Salvador; Franco Massaia, Scholastic Director of the Consulate in Rio de Janeiro; Raoul Poleggi, Italian Professor at the UFBA; Stefano Barbi Cinti, Director of the Italian School “Italia Amica” in Salvador; the director of the Dante Alighieri Institute in Salvador and other Italians who work to further the diffusion of the Italian language here in Salvador and in Bahia in general.

It was a good opportunity to discuss strategies to adopt and opportunities to reap, at least here in Salvador, for the the diffusion and the teaching of the Italian language.

On Tuesday the 27th there will be an evening at the ICBIE dedicated to the Italian language in the world, and I’ll let you know the details soon.

And even this latest mutirão on the 17th of October was a big success!

Above all, the presence of so many graffiti artists, who realized marvellous works, all on the theme of childhood, and then the throngs of smiling kids, the true protagonists of the day.  All of the activities were planned for them: the ICBIE theater piece, the storyteller Thiago, who arrived with his son straight from the Sem Teto camp in Pelourinho to enchant all the children with his stories and his magic.  And then the distribution of candies offered by Paranaguá; the gifts from Mestre Pedro; the face painting by our friend Marcia, with the spontaneous help of Meg, Sabika and Ina, and, naturally by Julio; the cart with popcorn, and finally, the lunch, entirely conceived to delight the children:  hot dogs and mingão mineiro (a porridge from Minas Gerais, from Marlene’s recipe) prepared by the skilled and deft hands of Lu!!!

The Indian dance, which was supposed to have been performed by Sabika, who had to renounce because of an injury, was brilliantly replaced by both of Monica and Pinel’s sons!!!!

To end it all, a capoeira roda by the hosts:  the Academia dos Filhos do Sol Nascente, and they invited everyone present to participate.

A big party, good vibrations and lots of smiling kids, who had fun during a day that was different from the others.

Thanks to all those who took part in the organization and realization, as always to Julio, to the whole ICBIE staff, to Paranaguá for the photos, to Stefano Barbi Cinti for the official video, to Lu for the lunch, to all the various artists, and especially, thanks to the kids of the Uruguai district, who, besides having fun, made it fun for us, too.  They (along with a blazing sun, to tell the whole truth!!!!!)  warmed our spirits.

More News on Next Saturday’s Mutirão

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

(English translation below)

Marcella

Mutirão October Poster
Next Saturday, October 17th, the third mutirão of the Oficina di Rua project will take place at the Academia Filhos do Sol Nascente in the Uruguai district.

The theme is “Children’s Day” and as a result, most of the planned activities will be centered upon involve playing and learning activities for them.  Using theater presentations, we’ll attempt to get them to participate in discussions relating to environmental problems, such as water usage, garbage collection, etc.  There will be no shortage of different creative activities, such as handicrafts with recycled paper and face painting, as well as watching an authentic Indian dance, listening to hip hop music and, naturally, witnessing a capoeira exhibition, seeing as we will be guests at the Academy of Mestre Pedro.  Where could we ever find a better place to include the traditional Bahian art of capoeira???

As always, we’re hoping for a big splash, especially with all the graffiti artists, whose work will make everything so much more colorful, just as is written on the leaflets promoting the event: “the power of colors can change everything.”

Story Instinct Logo

The Story Instinct project is well into its 5th week now with the organization GRUCON in Massaranduba. Unfortunately we had to stop the project in the other organizations we were working in because of lack of presences and time. However, we have been given the opportunity to deliver the project as an official course in a public school in Uruguai, starting from the 20th of October.
Story instinct group
GRUCON
Ana Rosa, GRUCON’s leader, fights for the rights of African descendants. She works with children and teenagers to remember their painful past, to treasure their rich culture and to understand their present situation – an admirable woman. It’s thanks to her that we have a group of active participants in Massaranduba.

The youth of the area don’t see the opportunities out there for them. They are blinded by the situation that is, to say the least, sad. Figures of responsibility such as adults, parents, older brothers and sisters sit on the street throughout the day with very little ambitions. It’s the young children who run around with their kites who spread some joy, but they too will soon fulfill the roles of the figures of responsibility that they look up to. That is why it is so important to get to these children, to give them a different view and to help them cherish that happiness which is innate in them.

The participants have started drawing their stories on A3 paper and have started snapping away with their disposable cameras. We want these works to be exhibited in various areas around Salvador; the first exhibition is to be held at ICBIE on the 13th of November. We are also hoping to exhibit at the University of Fine Arts and at the Museum of Modern Art in December.

After over a month of working with this group, we realized it was time to leave the area and go to the cinema. We went to see Salve Geral, a Brazilian film nominated for the 2010 Oscar for best foreign film. It is based on the true story of when Sao Paulo froze for two days in 2006 because the criminal organization PCC took control.  Although it was not a light-hearted film, it was definitely thought provoking.  We debated it outside the cinema, and it was interesting to see the reaction of the participants and hear their comments. We discussed the importance of recounting such stories and why they are necessary, and how they set the platform for debating issues that exist here in Brazil, but people tend to ignore.

Story instinct students

We are planning on taking them to the museum next week or inviting a storyteller to the lesson.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Pan-American school in Salvador is collaborating with us on the project. They not only want to provide us with some materials, but they will also provide us with transport for the outings and general support. We take the opportunity to thank Maria Mandolini, a teacher and head of the volunteers’ club at the school.
Also, Tubarao, who started off as a helping hand on the project, is now a vital part of the project. He helps us overcome communication difficulties, supports the project by devoting it time and attention, is working on making our website, and guides us into the favelas on a daily basis. Our project wouldn’t be the same without him.
We’ll keep you updated!
14th North and Northeast Rowing Cup 2009 – Ribeira – Salvador de Bahia
The oldest and most traditional sport to be practiced in the low city of Salvador is rowing, and the 14th edition of the North and Northeast Rowing Cup is underway.  Starting yesterday with a meeting of the technical commission and from today through October 11th, the elimination rounds and the final races will be held.  21 clubs from 9 different Brazilian states will participate, making a total of more than 250 athletes, coaches and managers, and a crowd of at least 4000 spectators, will enliven the Itapagipe peninsula during all five intense days.
All of this will happen right here, in front of our Institute, and the ICBIE itself is directly involved in the realization of the event.  In fact, our hostel will receive 16 athletes from the Pernambuco state, and for all four days of the races we will be serving meals for 150 athletes, offered by the Bahia Federation of Rowing Clubs.  Furthermore, on Wednesday our main hall hosted the meeting of the technical commission, and today there is a workshop on rowing, presented by a French athlete who is the official guest of the Cup.
Tomorrow, Friday the 9th, we will open our doors for an official meeting between judges and athletes in our main hall.
The ICBIE wishes to participate in all the life that takes place on the Itapagipe peninsula, including sporting events, because we recognize the social and educational work that the rowing clubs provide daily, and this has gone on for a long time in this area.  Hence, because we believe in the social value of sports in Bahian culture, we actively participate in this event, helping to nurture and sustain this sport’s tradition, which has been practiced in Bahia since 1904.
We’ll keep you informed on the results of the competitions!!!
Yesterday, Wednesday October 7th, marked the conclusion of the Spanish language course, and our Argentine professor Miguel put together a quick snack for his students, exclusively based on Spanish ingredients:  tortillas and all the rest!!!
The course was a solid success, with a dozen students who faithfully attended the lessons, down to the very last one!!!  Thanks to Miguel for the professional work and the warmth that totally conquered all the students.  We sincerely hope that our rapport can continue, with other new and interesting collaborations.
