After reviewing our collection of YouTube videos, it occurred to me that, despite the varied offerings, we were lacking a proper video documentation of our real jewel, the Leonardo da Vinci International Library.  As a precious resource that still needs attention and support, maybe this little vid will attract the attention of some good and savvy benefactor!

While the city of Rome still slumbers away in the August doldrums, the dynamic gang at ICBIE Europa is gearing up for the first incursion into meaningful social work, after the barrage of music, dancing, eating and drinking that has animated the summer.

Adhering to the venerable ICBIE mission,  we have chosen to start by offering language courses, Italian for Brazilians (and, yes, for other foreigners, too) and Brazilian Portuguese for Italians.  We are grateful to the neighborhood committee Villa Certosa, for providing us with instructional space in the trendy Pigneto district.  Beginning, intermediate and advanced courses will be offered daily, beginning on October 5th.  For more information, call 06 89010848 or 328 1363712, or email icbie.it@gmail.com.  Spread the word!

CALENDARIO DEGLI EVENTI DI RILIEVO IN PROGRAMMA DA AGOSTO A DICEMBRE 2009

Dopo svariate riunioni con tutto lo staff ICBIE, dopo numerose telefonate, incontri e riunioni ed infinite attese di risposte e conferme siamo finalmente riusciti a stilare il programma degli eventi che animeranno il nostro Istituto fino a dicembre 2009. Sempre fitta é la rete dei nostri contatti e sempre viva la partecipazione di personaggi del mondo della cultura di Salvador e non solo di Salvador.
Naturalmente accanto a questi eventi “eccezionali” ci sono i normali corsi che sempre offriamo all’ICBIE: italiano, inglese, spagnolo, informatica, disegno, computazione grafica.

Siamo, dunque, lieti di presentare a tutti gli amici e sostenitori ICBIE il nostro calendario di eventi confermati ed ancora in attesa di conferma.

Settembre - dicembre: progetto “The story instinct” – storie da raccontare attraverso diverse espressioni artistiche (scrittura, fotografia, video, disegno, etc.)

10 novembre: Costruzione di una replica del Muro di Berlino in praça do Pelourinho a Salvador de Bahia dove ciascun artista realizzerá la propria opera sul tema.

14 novembre – 22 novembre: Esposizione: “A Arte da Vida” dell’artista pittore Afro – Brasiliano Darton X

20 novembre: Presentazione del libro “Vidas em risco” di Gino Tapparelli e Ceci Vilar Noronha alla presenza degli stessi autori e di altri ospiti illustri. Per l’occasione sará proiettato anche il video “Fermata Salvador Bahia” in collaborazione con ARCI Solidarietá di Reggio Emilia

CALENDAR OF PROGRAMMED EVENTS FROM AUGUST TO DECEMBER 2009

After a number of meetings with the whole ICBIE staff, and after a lot of telephone calls, appointments and discussions, and infinite waiting for answers and confirmations, we are finally able to announce the program of events that will enliven our Institute during the coming months, up until December 2009.   As always, it reflects our rich network of contacts and involves the participation of important figures in the cultural world of Salvador and beyond.  Naturally, alongside these special events, the ICBIE continues to offer its standard courses in Italian, English, Spanish, computer science, drawing and computer graphics.

We are proud to present to our friends and supporters the following calendar of both confirmed events and events still waiting for confirmation.

Confirmed events

31 July - 23 October:  Cineforum “A few myths: comedy, suspense, love/passion, art” — film series for the local public in Portuguese or with Portuguese subtitles.

30 July - 20 August: Cineforum in the Italian language, for students in the Italian courses.  Four Italian films in the original language.

September - Dicember:  “The Story Instinct” project — storytelling workshop using multimedia techniques (writing, photography, video, drawing, etc.)

12 September: Oficina de Rua Project — 1st Graffiti Happening “Brazilian Independence” — Ribeira

1 - 4 October:  Oficina de Rua Project — trip to Recife for exchange and contacts with graffiti artists in Pernambuco, our partners in the project.  At least two artists will accompany the ICBIE President to Recife, to acquaint themselves with the work of their colleagues and to participate in specific events in the city.

10 October: Oficina de Rua Project — 2nd Graffiti Happening “Children’s Day” — Uruguay

24 October: Film projection: “The Amazon in Movement Belem 2009 — Social Forum.  Presentation and debate with the guest Juvenal Payayá, chief of the Payayá indigenous community.

30 October — Photography Exposition by Gesa Chomé - The Berlin Wall

3 - 12 November:  Exposition, “The Fall of the Berlin Wall… and all the other walls”.  Exposition of various works on the theme, by local and foreign artists.

10 November:  Construction of a replica of the Berlin Wall in Pelourinho Park in Salvador de Bahia, where each artist will realize an original work on the theme.

14 - 22 November:  Exposition:  “The Art of Life,” by the Afro-Brazilian artist Darton X.

QUANTE PRESENZE ALL’ICBIE!!!!!!

E´ormai molto tempo che tra andate e ritorni “freqüento” questo meraviglioso incrocio di vie e di persone che é il nostro Istituto.

Ma mai come in questo momento l’ICBIE é stato pieno di ospiti a loro modo originali e impegnati in maniera ciascuno diversa a riempire le loro giornate qui a Salvador.

Innanzitutto il nostro fantastico ostello é pieno!!! Lo animano: Consuelo, Rosa, Paolo, Luca, Tess, Sabika, Tubarão e giusto stamattina sono andate via Mahira e Cristabel. Le nostre amiche dopo aver vissuto le esperienze dell’atelier di disegno in Uruguay e aver partecipato a qualche attivitá nell’ABEAC (l’Associazione qui a Ribeira che opera con minori) sono partite per un tour a Rio de Janeiro e le aspettiamo al loro ritorno per collaborare qualche giorno con Mary nelle sue lezioni di inglese.

Il corso che Consuelo sta offrendo alle donne della Comunitá per la loro autostima, rilassamento ed in generale un pó di psicologia sta andando a gonfie vele e la stessa Consuelo insieme a Samantha (altro nuovo prezioso acquisto tra i volontari ICBIE) e Val sono entusiaste dei risultati e della partecipazione delle donne. A proposito del corso Consuelo vi saprá presto descrivere meglio le sue sensazioni.

Samantha é giunta all’ICBIE insieme al suo compagno argentino Miguel che si é da subito offerto anche lui per aiutare l’Istituto…ed allora, eccolo trasformato in professore di lingua spagnola!!!  Solo due giorni fa sono arrivate Tess e Sabika che hanno giá entusiasticamente cominciato a pensare ed organizzare i workshop per il progetto The story instinct: il loro primo step é conoscere la realtá del posto e come poter coinvolgere i potenziali partecipanti al progetto stesso. Da settembre inizieranno a pieno regime i loro workshop, per adesso esplorano la zona in compagnia dell’amico Tubarão che é giá qui da qualche giorno in piú di loro ed oggi Julio li ha accompagnati per un tour conoscitivo degli Alagados.

Ieri io e Pietro siamo stati accompagnati in Prefeitura de Salvador, a parlare di vari progetti con il Segretario alla cultura ed educazione, Carlo Soares, da uno dei nostri avvocati (nominato sul momento e per l’occasione!)….si sto parlando di Paolo Mauriello, arrivato in compagnia del suo amico Luca, a Salvador in vacanza ma giustamente coinvolto nelle attivitá ICBIE, oltre che come avvocato – per scherzo - anche come cuoco!!!!

Rosa continua a lavorare con il suo progetto di tesi per il master e aiuta l’istituto anche affiancando Niccoló in biblioteca.

Ah giá Niccoló!!!! E’ arrivato a Ribeira in cerca di un lavoretto di volontariato per occupare un pó il suo tempo e dare piú senso alla sua permanenza “turistica” a Salvador. Si é subito inserito nello staff ICBIE e sta facendo un ottimo lavoro di catalogazione di libri e riviste continuando l’immenso lavoro di organizzazione del nostro patrimonio bibliotecario.

Insomma atmosfera viva, frizzante ed operativa all’ICBIE e ventate di novitá e sferzate di energia rinnovata, grazie ai continui nuovi arrivi…é quello che ci vuole per sorridere e sentirsi piú forti nel proprio lavoro: l’unione fa la forza!!!

SO MANY PEOPLE AT THE ICBIE!!!!!!

At this point, between arrivals and departures, it’s been a long time that I “freqüento” this marvelous crossroads of projects and people that is our Institute.

But never has there been a moment when the ICBIE has been so full of original and committed guests, each of whom fill up their days here in Salvador in different ways.

Above all, our fantastic hostel is full!!!  The occupants:  Consuelo, Rosa, Paolo, Luca, Tess, Sabika, Tubarão and only this morning Mahira and Cristabel departed, after experiencing the drawing workshop in Uruguay and participating in various activities of the ABEAC (the Association here in Ribeira that works with children).  They are now off on a tour of Rio de Janeiro and we await their return, when they will help Mary out with her English lessons.

The course that Consuelo is offering to the women of the community, dealing with self-esteem, stress-relief and offering a bit of psychology in general, is going extremely well, and Consuela, together with Samantha (another precious acquisition among the ICBIE volunteers) and Val, are enthusiastic about both the results and the participation of the women.  You’ll be hearing from Consuelo, who is eager to share her impressions.

Samantha came to the ICBIE with her Argentine boyfriend Miguel, who immediately offered his services to the Institute and has been transformed into… a Spanish professor!!!  Just two days ago, Tess and Sabika got here, and they have already enthusiastically begun to plan and organize the workshops for their project, The Story Instinct: their first step is to get to know the realities of the neighborhood, in order to know how to involve the potential participants in their project.  Their workshops will begin full steam in September, and for now they are exploring the neighborhood in the company of their friend Tubarão, who arrived a few days before they did, and today Julio accompanied them on a reconnaissance tour of the Alagados.

Yesterday Pietro and I went to an appointment at the Salvador City Hall, to talk about various projects with the Secretary for Culture and Education, Carlo Soares. We were accompanied by one of our lawyers (hired on the spot for the occasion!)… and I am speaking of Paolo Mauriello, who is visiting us along with his friend Luca;  officially, they are here on vacation, but they have rightly been recruited into the ICBIE activities, not only as (so-called) lawyers, but also as cooks!!!!

Rosa is continuing her work on a project for her Master’s thesis, and she helps the Institute by working with Niccolò in the library, among other things.

Ah, and then Niccoló!!!!  He came to Ribeira looking for some voluntary work, in order to pass the time and to do something meaningful during his visit to Salvador as a tourist.  He fell right into things, becoming a real ICBIE staff member, doing an excellent job cataloging books and magazines, continuing the immense job of organizing our library’s collection.

As you can see, there is a lively, bubbling and productive atmosphere at the ICBIE, and, thanks to the sequence of new arrivals, the fresh winds of innovation and the whiplashes of renewed strength are just what the doctor ordered, making you smile and feel stronger in your own work:  power comes by working together!!!

VISITA ALL’ATELIER DI OFICINA DE RUA IN URUGUAY

Giovedi, 13 agosto, io e le altre volontarie presenti al momento in ICBIE (Consuelo, Rosa, Mahira e Cristobal) siamo andate a vedere con i nostri occhi l’ottimo lavoro che il “professore” Bigode sta facendo con i bambini di Uruguay, uno dei quartieri coinvolti nel progetto Oficina de Rua.

In questo quartiere il progetto sta utilizzando come spazio per gli atelier di disegno e graffiti per i bambini, la Academia de Mestre Pedro – Associação Filhos do Sol Nascente – ben conosciuta da tutti i nostri sostenitori ICBIE.

Accompagnate da Julio e dallo stesso Bigode siamo arrivate all’Academia attraversando le aree di Mangueira e Massaranduba dove operano con la loro arte sociale i nostri amici grafiteiros, lasciando riconoscibili segni colorati (grafiti eccezionali) al loro passaggio.
In Academia siamo stati accolti da una quindicina di ragazzini sorridenti e felici del nostro arrivo, soprattutto la decina che partecipa assiduamente alla lezione di Bigode e che in questo giorno finalmente sono arrivati al loro primo traguardo: dipingere su una parete vera!!! Fino ad ora, infatti, Bigode ha loro sapientemente e professionalmente insegnato il disegno su carta e i risultati che abbiamo osservato sui loro fogli lasciano capire quanto bravo e competente sia stato Bigode e quanto sia grande la voglia dei bambini di apprendere!!! Ed eccoli finalmente all’interno dell’Academia stessa a riportare sulla parete i disegni fatti su carta!! I risultati sono eccezionali, l’impegno dei bambini evidente e tangibile e la competenza di Bigode incredibile. Le lezioni, infatti, non sono solo di disegno ma Bigode insegna loro a stare in gruppo, a condividere, a comportarsi con gli altri e a conoscere il valore dell’espressione artistica.

I colori dei disegni e i sorrisi dei bambini sono in forte armonia tra di loro ma in contrasto stridente con una realtá cosi dura e difficile per i bamini stessi. Ed é proprio attraverso il lavoro degli atelier di disegno del progetto Oficina de Rua e soprattutto del continuo lavoro dell’Associazione Filhos do Sol Nascente – che offre loro lezioni di capoeira, samba, artigianato e soprattutto reforço escolar (una sorta di nostro dopo scuola) -  che questi bambini trovano un’alternativa piú sorridente alla loro realtá quotidiana. Restano le difficoltá e le scarse risorse finanziarie e di personale che sempre affliggono questa associazione ma speriamo che anche attraverso il progetto Oficina de Rua, Mestre Pedro e il suo prezioso lavoro per la comunitá di Uruguay, possa trarre i meritati benefici di visibilitá e sostegno.

Proprio Mestre Pedro mi ha raccontato che ora il loro prossimo progetto é di aprire una piccola scuola per ragazzi “minorati” e per questo hanno bisogno di materiale, mobili e strutture adeguate. In ogni caso l’impegno da parte loro c’é e va riconosciuto, ed é evidente con che gioia i bambini si recano in questo spazio dove hanno trovato sicuramente una vera famiglia ad accoglierli e a tenerli occupati in attivitá per loro divertenti ed interessanti.

E’ sempre bello trovare piccoli angoli di speranza in luoghi tanto difficili ma la speranza va nutrita e fatta crescere ogni giorno…é un invito per tutti noi a riflettere e ad impegnarsi per questo.

A VISIT TO THE OFICINA DE RUA WORKSHOP IN URUGUAY

On Thursday, August 13th, I went with the other volunteers presently working at the ICBIE (Consuelo, Rosa, Mahira and Cristobal) to witness the splendid job that “Professor” Bigode is doing with the kids in Uruguay, one of the neighborhoods involved in the project Oficina de Rua.

In this area the project is using a space provided by the Academy of Mestre Pedro – Associação Filhos do Sol Nascente, which is well known to all our ICBIE supporters, –  as a workshop for drawing and graffiti for the local kids.

Accompanied by Julio and by Bigode himself, we arrived at the Academy after passing through Mangueira and Massaranduba, where our graffiti artist friends are carrying out their social art projects, leaving their unmistakably colorful messages (stupendous graffiti works) everywhere they have been.

In the Academy, we were received by about fifteen smiling little kids, all happy to see us, especially the ten of them who assiduously follow Bigode’s lessons, because today they have arrived at their first goal:  to paint on a real wall!  Up to now, in fact, Bigode has wisely and responsibly taught them drawing on paper, and from the results that we were able to verify from all their papers, it is clear that Bigode has really shown his competence and his great ability to teach, which are just as great as the kids’ desire to learn!!!   And now here they are, inside their own Academy, ready to transfer their drawings to the walls!  The end result was exceptional, the commitment of the kids was clear and obvious, and Bigode’s proficiency was incredible.  The lessons, in fact, weren’t all just about drawing, but also taught the kids to work together in a group, to share and to socialize with the others while getting to know the value of artistic expression.

The colors of the drawings and the smiles of the children harmoniously blended together, but in strident contrast to the hard reality in which those same kids have to live.  And it is thanks to the drawing workshop of the Oficina de Rua project and above all to the continuous activity of the Filhos do Sol Nascente Association – which offers them lessons in capoeira, samba, handicrafts and, particularly important, reforço escolar (a kind of after school tutoring) -  that these kids are able to find a better alternative to their day to day life.  The difficulties remain and so do the limited finances and insufficient personnel that always plague this association, but we hope that with the help of the Oficina de Rua project, Mestre Pedro, and the precious work that he does for the Uruguay community, can receive some of the recognition and support that he deserves.

Mestre Pedro recently told me that their next project is to open a small school for retarded children, and for this they have need of materials, furniture, and an appropriate structure.  At any rate, their commitment is unbending and should be commended, as can be seen in the joy of the children who frequent his courses, where they have finally found a real family to embrace them and to give them enjoyable and interesting activities.

It’s always wonderful to find little corners of hope in such difficult places, but the hope has to be nourished and made to grow every day… it’s an invitation for all of us to reflect upon and to dedicate ourselves to it.

Dopo il primo mese a Salvador, non saprei come descrivere le strane sensazioni che ho in mente: e’ come se stessi qui da sempre, e, a dire la verita’, l’ Itália non mi manca affatto. Non e’, come tutti  facilmente penserebbero, per la musica, i sorrisi, o perche’ qui e’ tutto piu’’ facile e ci si diverte, no. Qui non e’ affatto cosi’, almeno cio’ che io ho visto e’ lontano dall’ideale turístico del Brasile in cui tutti ridono e si divertono. Ballano sempre, questo si. E ridono anche. Ma non e’ questo che mi há spinto a riflettere sulla mia vita a Roma. In realta’, una qualche riflessione io l’ho sempre fatta, con esiti negativi e sconfortanti. Guardando la mia Itália, vedo um paese stanco, stantio, sfinito, che non ha nulla da offrire a chi ha idee dinamiche e vuole dire qualcosa di nuovo, o, semplicemente, ha voglia di vivere, e di vivere una vita che gli appartenga a lui e che non rispecchi ciecamente le esigenze della societa’ in cui vive. Ho la visione di un paese, l’Italia, in cui e’ tutto fermo, tutto chiuso, dove tutto e’ apparenza e non sostanza. Prendiamo l’arte, pochi fanno arte perche’ hanno um reale, imprescindibile desiderio di dire qualcosa,e meno ancora si incontrano movimenti e gruppi di persone che spingono per creare qualcosa di condiviso che abbia un senso e che dia senso a cio’ che viviamo. Qui e’ molto diverso. Qui la gente ha altri problemi, ma ho la sensazione di un paese in crescita, dove le persone  hanno l’entusiasmo e la necessita’ di esprimersi, di lanciare idee, ideali, immagini, sensazioni, che possano trasformare e far vedere la realta’ sotto una luce diversa.  Forse qui e’ ancora un’esigenza, quella di sognare e trasformare la realta’ inventandone un’altra migliore fatta di idee e colori .  Questo non risolve i problemi, ne’ vorrei fare del buonismo e trasmettere l’idea che qui tutto e’ bello. Non e’ cosi, anzi, all’inizio avevo la sensazione di um território ostile, totalmente differente dal mondo a cui sono abituata. E in effetti lo e’. Fare un semplice bagno al mare significa rischiare di essere trascinati dalla corrente, e anche le zone interne di foresta che ancora non ho visitato non devono essere troppo tranquille. La natura e’ la metáfora del luogo in cui ti trovi. La gente qui sembra aperta, ma in realta’ anche li’ devi entrare in una cultura diversa, in cui tu sei il diverso e ti vedono come tale. Devi cercare di abbandonare i tuoi vecchi schemi, cambiare il tuo sguardo sulle cose e su te stesso, fare i conti con le tue barriere/chiusure e pregiudizi. E’ uno sforzo di apertura e di conoscenza, non sempre facile, ma senza dubbio di forte impatto, che mi sta cambiando e in cui sto crescendo, grazie a tutti per questo,

After my first month in Salvador, it’s hard to describe all the strange sensations in my head: it’s like I’ve always been here, and, to tell the truth, I don’t miss Italy at all.  And, it’s not, as everyone automatically thinks, because of the music, the smiles, or because everything is easier here and you have a lot of fun.  It’s not that at all, at least from what I have seen, which is far from the smiling and happy Brazil that you see in the tourist brochures.  The people dance all the time, that’s true.  And they laugh.  But that’s not what pushed me to rethink my life in Rome.   Actually, I’ve always had my doubts, with negative and uncomfortable conclusions.  When I look at my Italy, I see a country that is tired, old-fashioned and exhausted, with nothing to offer to someone with dynamic ideas and the desire to say something new.  Or who simply wants live, and live a life as he chooses, without blindly following society’s rules.  I have formed the image of a country, Italy, where everything is at a standstill, closed into itself, where everything is appearance and not substance.  Look at the arts… few people make art because they have a real, inescapable desire to express something, and even less do you find movements and groups of people who try to do something together, something that makes sense and that reveals the meaning of what we are experiencing.  Here, it is very different.  Here the people have other problems, but I get the feeling of a country that is growing, where the people have enthusiasm and the need to express themselves, launching ideas, ideals, imagination, sensations, that are able to to transform things and reveal reality under a different light. Perhaps, there is still a need here, a need to dream and transform reality by inventing a better one, made of ideas and colors.  This may not resolve the problems, nor do I want to gloss things up and transmit the idea that everything is beautiful here.  It isn’t; instead, at the beginning, I felt that the place was threatening, totally different from what I was used to.  And in fact, it is different.  To have a swim means risking to be swept away in the current, and the forests inland, that I haven’t visited yet, probably aren’t too tranquil either. Nature is a metaphor of the place where you find yourself.  The people here are open, but in reality, you still have to enter into a different culture, one where you’re the different one and that’s how people see you.  You have to try to abandon your old patterns, change your viewpoints, both toward what you see and how you see yourself, taking into account your own barriers and prejudices. It’s a challenge to open up and discover, not always easy, but without doubt strong in its impact, and it is changing me and making me grow.  Thanks to everyone for this,

Fred Menendez gave his second benefit concert for the ICBIE last night at Noche de Roma in EUR.  Because this concert was a part of a series dedicated to Brazil, his band played fewer international standards, concentrating instead on the kind of repertoire normally associated with the city of Salvador and its carnival:  the Trio Elétrico.

There was an even bigger crowd at Sunday’s concert, owing to the more central location and the concerted publicity of this city-sponsored event, a part of the famous Estate romana—the cultural activities that, for more than thirty years, enliven the Roman summer.

Warm thanks to Fred and his band for the wonderful music, and we wish him good luck on the rest of his Italian tour.  After a couple days wandering around the Eternal City, they will be traveling up to Ferrara, for the annual Buskers’ Festival (August 21-30).

Anyone who complains about jet lag should have heard last night’s concert at the Social Beach in Ostia.  Fred Menendez and the three members of his band flew in to Fiumicino airport from Salvador yesterday morning at eleven o’clock, yet they gave a dazzling concert, playing until after 1 AM without showing a trace of fatigue.   Fred’s flashy licks on his unique double-necked mandolin - Bahian guitar, backed by the tight ensemble playing of  Orlando Francisco N. De Oliveira on rhythm guitar, bassist Jacivaldo de Freitas and Hilvaldo Patriarca Dos Santos on drums, mesmerized a big crowd with a surprisingly diverse repertoire that included rock standards such as ‘Hotel California’ and ‘Sultans of Swing,’ Brazilian classics (yes, they even played ‘Garota de Ipanema’), but also a rollicking version of Mozart’s ‘Rondò alla turca.’

We have to thank the nice people at the Social Beach for providing us with such an ideal venue.  (Their history is notable; a few years ago, their property on the seacoast in downtown Ostia was an up-scale establishment, but it was seized by the courts because its owners were in the Mafia, and it was entrusted to a non-profit community organization.)  Loona and Damiano did a splendid job organizing the whole event, including finding an empty apartment for the band to stay in while they are in Rome, picking them up at the airport, and, most importantly, carrying the ICBIE banner high, all evening long.  And, as always, Damiano topped off the evening as his alter-ego, DJAmião, churning out his great mixes of Brazilian dance music.

And, for all our Roman friends who missed it, they have one more chance, because there will be another show tonight at the Noche de Roma in EUR— Via delle Tre Fontane, n° 7, at 10 PM.

Il giorno 31 di luglio con una piccola festa nella sede dell’ICBIE si sono chiusi i corsi professionalizzanti per operatore sociale in campo artistico e nello stesso incontro si è anche dato ufficialmente il via alla continuazione del Progetto OFICINA DE RUA, ovvero la seconda fase che prevede l’intervento dei vecchi operatori spontanei e con un’esperienza del Progetto Salvador Graffita del Comune di Salvador (che appoggia il Progetto proposto da Arci Solidarietà e Regione Emilia Romagna), i quali ora andranno a coordinare su campo i nuovi artisti/operatori formatisi in questi cinque mesi di preparazione teorica e pratica attraverso i corsi organizzati nell’ICBIE, in quattro quartieri poveri dell’aria situata nella Cidade Baixa di Salvador: Saramandaia, Massaranduba, Alagados e sem tetos da baixa do Bomfim-Ribeira. Dovranno cavarsela nell’insegnare ai ragazzini di strada a disegnare e poi graffittare.

Insomma sempre più spesso il settore dei servizi sociali diventa un’opportunità concreta, sia per aiutare gli altri a uscire dall’isolamento, sia perché quelli che ora andranno ad insegnare, sono quelli che prima vi si trovavano in tale isolamento. A ciò si deve aggiungere il bisogno sempre più conclamato di lavorare sui fenomeni di disagio sociale che stanno colpendo sempre più queste aree periferiche della città data la enorme crescita demografica e conseguente esclusione sociale che genera sempre più povertà e violenza.

Questa attività di insegnare ai bambini e ragazzi di strada ad abbellire la propria povera periferia con i disegni e graffiti murali ha messo in moto un circuito virtuoso in cui la comunità locale ha potuto ricevere benefici e appunto si sono potute creare queste figure similari al vero Operatore Sociale proveniente da lauree universitarie. Qui invece si è partito da corsi preparatori concentrandosi su linguaggi e attività artistico-culturali, ma apprendendo anche disegno e graffiti, oltre all’informatica e educazione civica e sociale, ovvero cittadania.

In questo modo si intendono formare e moltiplicare altri giovani operatori, con caratteri di prossimità, che potranno essere inseriti a pieno titolo dopo l’esperienza di progetti non permanenti, nelle attività e nei progetti sociali della Municipalità che potrà così probabilmente garantirgli un salario, avendo egli acquisito competenze specifiche nel settore d’intervento.

Ecco infine si vuole informari i nostri sostenitori che già alcuni di questi cosiddetti ateliers di strada sono già iniziati da un paio di settimane soprattutto agli Alagados e a Massaranduba. Il 4 agosto cominceranno anche quelli di Saramandaia e di Ribeira-Baixa do Bomfim.

With a small celebration at the ICBIE, the day July 31st marked the closure of the professional training courses for social work in the field of art education.  At the same time, the official announcement of the continuation of the OFICINA DE RUA project was made, beginning the second phase, which entails the intervention of the veteran trainers, as a part of the Salvador Graffita Project of the City of Salvador (which supports the project, as proposed by ARCI Solidarietà and the Emilia Romagna Region), who now will coordinate the new artist/instructors, after the formation that they received during these five months of theoretical and practical training at the ICBIE courses.  This second phase will consist of field work, centered in four poor neighborhoods in the Cidade Baixa of Salvador:  Saramandaia, Massaranduba, Alagados and the homeless people of Bomfim-Ribeira. They will be teaching street children how to draw and then how to do graffiti.

In short, more than ever, the sector of social services is becoming a concrete opportunity, both to help others to escape their isolation and also because those people who are now going off to teach were locked in the same isolation themselves.  Beyond that, there is the added need, always more pressing, to work at contrasting the phenomenon of social inequality, which is increasing in these areas on the periphery of the city, owing to the the enormous population growth and the resulting social exclusion that generates more and more poverty and violence.

The program for teaching children and homeless kids to beautify their own poor neighborhoods with drawings and wall graffiti has set off a positive cycle, where the local community receives benefits while forming these young leaders, similar to bonafide social workers who come out of the universities.  Here, instead, we began with preparatory courses concentrating on language and cultural and artistic activities, but also lessons in drawing and graffiti as well computer science and civil and social education, or citizenship.

In this way, the formation of new young workers, who will work in their own communities, will be able to lead them to permanent positions, after this temporary experience, in the city’s social projects, providing them with a salary after having acquired specific qualifications and experience in the field.

Lastly, we wish to inform our supporters of the fact that some of these street workshops have already begun a couple of weeks ago, in the Alagados and in Massaranduba.  On the 4th of August, the ones in Saramandaia and Ribeira-Baixa do Bomfin will begin.
