ICBIE Alagados Show-Dinner at Casetta Rossa

(English translation below)

Steve & Veronique Pietro’s Speech at Casetta Rossa

Yesterday, April 29th, was an intense day for the ICBIE Europa people and for Pietro Gallina, ICBIE’s president from Salvador!

In the afternoon, Pietro, Monica and Marcella (from ICBIE Europa), accompanied by our dear friend Steve from Lahn Artists in Germany (who was passing through Rome), were invited by the friends of the Victoria Regis NGO to participate in an encounter organized at the Polyvalent Youth Center of the XVII District of Rome, with the title: Human rights in another key.

On the agenda:  the results and the conclusions of the exhibit Right to a Future, a part of the manifestation 2009 - European Year for Creativity and Innovation; the Italy  Brazil Mozambique School Objectives Pilot Project and Pedagogy Creator of Value (of which the ICBIE is a partner and point of reference in Salvador de Bahia, where one of the art laboratories planned in the project will be created); organization and participation in the public event set for October 2009, to launch the Movement for the Right to a Future, as part of the Millenium Objectives and Article 28 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The meeting was full of positive synergies and a platform for future collaborations with the XVII District of the city government, which expressed great interest in hosting the photography exhibit of the Alagados, as a part of specific initiatives currently underway in the district.

Leaving the elegant and central area of Prati, our delegation went to the proletarian and fascinating Garbatella!  There, in the warmth of the Casetta Rossa, a host of friends and supporters were joyfully waiting for Pietro, in order to inaugurate the Alagados exhibition that will remain on display at the Casetta until May 3rd.

After viewing the beautiful photos, the participants were able to savor a delicious Brazilian dinner—fejioada and moqueqa de peixe—prepared by the expert hands of the Casetta’s cook, who, abandoning the Roman specialities of carbonaras and amatricianas, launched into South American experimentations.

As always, it was a great party, full of communal joy, with all of our warm friends and supporters.  The only blemish was the absence of the Brazilian representatives of the Officina de Rua Project (Edvando Luiz Castro Pinto (Tucunaré), José Francisco Paranaguá Guimarães, Carlos Ribeiro Soares and his wife Aridea Pestana Cruz), due to the fact that they were suddenly forced to return to Salvador  due to their civic duties.  They departed yesterday morning.

We eagerly await their return for another, longer Italian visit.

Another night of Brazilian music and culture.  The dinner party to celebrate the closing of the ICBIE Europa Alagados photo exposition at the Off!cine in the Pigneto district of Rome was a grand success, with cordiality, good fun and a cool atmosphere.  We thank all the numerous visitors to the show and those who came to the final party, who, as always, showed their support for our Association.  But above all, special thanks go to the inspirational musicians who so professionally animated the evening, for free:  Roberto Mazzoli (http://www.myspace.com/teresabatista), Massimo Ventricini and Massimiliano Natale, without forgetting our veteran supporter DjAmião.

See you again at the next ICBIE Europa event.

It has been a busy time for the ICBIE’s Roman supporters–and it promises to get even busier this week, with Pietro’s arrival and the big ICBIE convention set for next weekend.  Last Friday night, there was an ICBIE benefit dinner/dance at the American Overseas School of Rome, which included a sumptuous churrasco (prepared by our stalwart cook, Serginho), a rousing capoeira performance (by a local crew with leaders from Salvador) and plenty of music from DjAmião.

Friday, April 17th, 2009

It’s that time of year again, and tomorrow afternoon Pietro will be leaving Salvador for another extended tour of Europe, together with a group of Salvador city officials, to promote the ICBIE, the innovative Salvador grafita program and, especially, the new Oficina de Rua project.  Pietro’s companions will be Edvando Luiz Castro Pinto (Tucunaré), city coordinator of the Salvador grafita program; José Francisco Paranaguá Guimarães, official Salvador grafita photographer (and faithful ICBIE collaborator); Carlos Ribeiro Soares, city councillor for culture and education and his consort Aridea Pestana Cruz.

The will fly to Frankfurt, Germany, where they will meet with our friend Daniele Messina at the Italian consulate.  On Monday, they go to Limburg to meet with the mayor and to see Steve and Renate at Lahnartists.  On Tuesday, they travel south to Basel, where they will visit with ICBIE collaborator Judith Rickenbacher before proceeding to Riva del Garda on Wednesday.  There, they will meet with the mayor to establish a partnership, and the city will remain their base until Sunday, allowing for day trips to Verona, Trento and Venice.

Sunday morning they will move to Modena, where they will brunch with former Ribeira resident Davide Diacci, and in the afternoon they will meet with the mayor of Reggio Emilia, Graziano del Rio.  On Monday, they will get together with the co-partners of the new Oficina de Rua project, visiting the ARCI office in Reggio before moving on to Bologna to meet the city councillor Elisabetta Calari at the Palazzo d’Accursio, in Piazza Maggiore.

On Tuesday (the 27th), they will conclude their discussions with ARCI in Reggio, have a quick meeting with the municipal secretary of culture in Modena and with the director of the Jazz Bar Pernilla who has supported the ICBIE for years, and then drive to Rome.  During their three days in the capital, they will visit the Alagados Photo Exhibit at the Cassetta Rossa), where they will meet with all the people from ICBIE Europa, and spend a morning at the American Overseas School of Rome, admiring Júlio and Bigode’s murals and visiting with old friends, besides seeing the sights of the city.  On the morning of May 1st, they fly back to Salvador (via Frankfurt), leaving Pietro to continue his adventures (and valiant ICBIE campaigns) in Rome.

The event took place on Saturday April 4th, and as we joyfully opened our doors to such happy people, it was like the tip of an iceberg, in the sense that the performance carried a symbolic value, because these days we are constantly dreaming of the future ICBIE Theater.  The play, with a cast consisting of kids from ABEAC, portrayed a television program that, relying upon the kids’ animated and informal delivery, offered a critique of the fundamental problems of our society: urban decor, dengue fever, child prostitution, domestic violence and other problems that are frequently encountered by the people of Salvador.  The director Almirsezar succeeded in creating a realistic interplay between the members of the cast, with plenty of surprises and the revelation of some very promising artists, with special attention focused upon the young actress Luana Lima, the protagonist of the drama.  Congratulations to the children of the ABEAC.

Orphans in Transition

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Besides the grinding poverty that assails abandoned children in Salvador, they also become prey to the interests of the organizations who should be helping them.  Readers of this blog are familiar with the little Minha vó Flor orphanage a few blocks away from the ICBIE; we have helped them in every way possible for the last four years, even finding them an anonymous donor in Switzerland who provided funds for a restructuring of their building.  Well, the authorities have more or less closed it down, on the grounds that its personnel was not sufficiently qualified to carry out proper education, recreation and hygiene.   Paradoxically, the closing set off a big battle between many recently formed NGOs, who fought over the fifty children that had to be reassigned, all eager to profit from the government funds that are allocated for each child, as a part of a racket between corrupt NGOs and politicians.  Only about a dozen of the oldest kids now remain at vó Flor, and they still participate in appropriate ICBIE activities, such as the Italian lunch that we’ve been holding on Saturdays.

The absence of younger children at ICBIE activities was short lived, because a new opportunity quickly appeared, this time with another group, ABEAC (Associação Beneficiente Educação Arte e Cidadania), active throughout the Itapagipe peninsula, with a center in Ribeira, located on Rua da Penha, behind the famous ice cream shop, where thirty homeless families occupy a shabby building that is divided into tiny living quarters. ABEAC assists them to improve their living conditions, health, culture, job training and education.

ABEAC is assisted by another Italian NGO, APA (Accademia Psicologia Applicata), and their situation is vividly described here (in Italian).

To jumpstart ICBIE’s new partnership, our resident head artist Júlio Costa has organized a theater performance which is taking place TODAY.  He will be sending us news in the coming days.

National Graffiti Day

(English translation below)

ONG PROJETO CIDADÃO COMEMORA DIA NACIONAL DO GRAFITE

NATIONAL GRAFFITI DAY CELEBRATED BY THE CITIZEN PROJECT NGO
On the 27th of March, numerous cities commemorated National Graffiti Day.  The day was chosen to coincide with the anniversary of the death of the street artist Alex Valluri, an Ethiopian naturalized Brazilian, on the 26th of March, 1987.  The day after, his friends painted the tunnel of Avenida Paulista in his memory.  Since then, the date has given rise to celebratory painting sessions, spreading to other states and finally becoming the official day to pay tribute to graffiti art in all Brazil.

In Salvador, last Friday (27), a group of new and old school street writers, armed with their spraycans, sketches, paints and a lot of goodwill, put their hands to work, transforming the outside wall of the Campus N° 1 of the State University of Bahia (UNEB) into a beautiful open air art gallery.

This fourth edition of the event, organized by the NGO Citizen Project (Projeto Cidadão), coordinated by Prof. Antonio Jorge, relied once again upon the support of the UNEB, the first institution of higher education to support graffiti art.  It is important to stress the fact that the current president, Lourival Valentim, is a great champion of graffiti activities in the Cabula community.

The graffiti artists present were:  Ufa de Menezes, Sag, Saic, Tiko, Coro, Kura, Lazi, Picó, Liso, Afro, Olukemi, Denis Sena, Tárcio V, Samuka, Core, Seden, Kazu, Kond, Brak and Livre.
