Schaffhausen ICBIE Benefit

Thanks to the efforts of our friend Phillip Wagner at Rhythm of Hope in the United States, tomorrow night there will be an important ICBIE Benefit Concert in the Swiss city of Schaffhausen! Actually, Phillip pressed upon his friend Fränzi Ruef to organize the event, and she solicited the help of Mike Saxer, who happens to be the drummer of the hardcore punk band Fall Apart. Thanks to their efforts, the concert will feature no less than four thrashing bands from Germany, Austria and Switzerland: Ays, Within Walls, Fall Apart, and Anchors Aweigh.

We thank everyone for the splendid work, organizing such an impressive event. Fränzi has promised to send a report and photos in the coming days.  The proceeds will be divided between two ICBIE projects: the theater project (in cooperation with Rhythm of Hope and Engineers Without Borders) and the establishment of a Rhythm of Hope office at the ICBIE in Ribeira.

For some samples of the raging music that will be helping our kids in Salvador, here are the homepages of the bands:

ICBIE Facade, May 08

(English translation below)

Regatta Day in front of ICBIERegatta Judges Platform in front of ICBIE

Last Sunday was the 2nd Tap of the 2008 Bahian Rowing Championship, and, because the Judges’ platform is directly in front of the Institute, at 10 AM the ICBIE opened its doors so the the local community could enjoy a perfect view of the regatta.

A good crowd, thoroughly imbued with the inimitable Bahian party spirit, delighted in the splendid furnishings, thronging the front rooms and the patio to cheerfully incite their favorite rowers.

Once again, the ICBIE has supported community events, aiming to improve the living conditions of Ribeira by fostering social aggregations that are rooted in local traditions. And again, we want the ICBIE to be a focal point for integration and for promoting Bahian culture!!!!

Until the next event

Marcella Writes from Ribeira

This long letter recounts the latest news from the ICBIE, where four volunteers are working hard. (English translation below!)

Amalia, Cinzia, Giovanna & Marcella

The girls in the Library

The ICBIE activities never stop. I arrived in Ribeira ten days ago, and it’s useless trying to describe the feelings, seeing the familiar places and faces from last year. Nothing has changed, the same warm welcome, the usual smiles and above all a whole lot of desire to accomplish things.

I found two Italian ICBIE friends, Cinzia and Giovanna, who have already been here for a month, and a new Argentine friend, Amalia, who happened upon us but was immediately adopted by the volunteers who are presently assisting the ever tireless “Dona” Marlene in her routine and in the special activities of the institute (while “Sor” Pietro is traveling in Europe, spreading and consolidating the consensus for the ICBIE among its large network of international support).

Cinzia and Giovanna are busy doing many things. As competent and important assistants for the Italian lessons, in the ICBIE and elsewhere in town, they participate in the lessons to aid in conversation practice for the students, especially those of the third level, and the hours in the classroom fly by, full of chatter and songs. The students respond enthusiastically to this winning method for learning the Italian language. They also helped Marlene with the Italian lessons for the Brazilian dance troupe that will be leaving soon for their summer tour of Italy.

Together we are helping Marlene to organize a future course of Portuguese for foreigners, choosing and organizing the best teaching materials, so the ICBIE guests can have an extra opportunity while they stay here at the institute.

Cinzia is working on a crucial project in the Leonardo da Vinci Library. When she arrived, almost all the books weren’t in order, piled on the many shelves that pack our library. With a patient and scrupulous effort, Cinzia is continuing the work begun by Ana Paula, who initiated a computer system for managing the library. Cinzia then organized the sections: tourism, cinema, theater, and Brazilian, German, French, Latin-American, Russian, Greek, Latin and English literature, putting all the books in alphabetical order by author. In the meantime books that had not yet been bar-coded were taken care of, as they were inserted in the computer catalog. In this task, Cinzia was aided by a local volunteer, Barbara, and by Thaiane, Lou’s daughter, who comes every morning to offer her invaluable help, with total seriousness and commitment… yes, we can’t forget the importance of the local volunteers, so anxious to learn, but also eager to help out in all the ICBIE activities!!!

Naturally we all gravitate to the library, to give a hand whenever it is possible…we hope to make it operational as soon as possible, for the community to use, not just as an efficient book loaning service!!! Think of how wonderful it would be for a kid from Ribeira, or from one of the other even more impoverished neighborhoods nearby, to have the opportunity to read a book, choosing from the infinity of topics that are available in our library!!??? A dream that can come true, as long as we maintain our interest and our diligence.

Giovanna is working on a professional task, rewriting the ICBIE web pages. The Italian section is already revised, thanks also to the technical support of our friend Guido in Italy. Giovanna and Guido have established a solid long-distance rapport, with Giovanna rewriting and re-ordering the pages and sending them to Guido, who puts them online, after defining a new and attractive graphic design. The ICBIE website is our best calling card!!!

Giovanna is also trying to put all the ICBIE’s administrative papers and computer documents in order. The efficient operation of the institute depends on a logical organization of this information, and Giovanna, as she reorders, rewrites and archives all this material, is following the needs of Marlene.

Our Argentine friend Amalia, besides being a wonderful cook (you have to taste her handmade pasta!!!), is helping us to organize all the teaching materials while she sits in for our local volunteers who work in the reception room and do errands, so they can attend their courses. She’s a jack-of-all-trades and we really hope to exploit her artistic talents, because in Argentina, Amalia is involved with social theater projects, for and with children. Maybe during the two to three months that we’re here, we just might pull together a foundation course for kids who want to get started in theater arts.
Amalia is also helping me to research for grants and economic support for the ICBIE. We are sifting through all the possible institutions, administrations and organizations in Brazil, in Italia and in Europe that could help support the venerable ICBIE activities: we need lots of people with iron wills and who believe in the mission of the ICBIE in Ribeira, but good will and high motivation aren’t enough, if not accompanied by an adequate economic and financial support. It would be ideal if we could find a steady and prolonged income, maybe from the European Union or some other big organization, and were trying to decide which projects have the greatest possibility of being financed. For this, I ask you all for help and suggestions.

The atmosphere here is always one of collaboration and optimism, and the determination is strong, the ideas aren’t in short supply, and we all believe in what we’re doing…and if ever a doubt were to arise, it would be smashed by the eyes of the boys and girls who assiduously attend the ICBIE, and that glimmer of joy and gratitude for everything that the ICBIE has done and continues to do for the community of Ribeira and its surroundings.

Until the next update!!!

Julio at the Roma Camp

ICBIE artist Julio Costa is certainly having plenty of adventures during his European tour. After his exciting morning in Anguillara on Sunday morning (and his first experience of roast artichokes in Campagnano that afternoon), he accompanied Pietro and Roy to Rome on Monday, to join our great friends Guido and Paolo at the national headquarters of the ARCI (Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Italiana). The ARCI has been supporting the ICBIE from the beginning: their help in building the computer lab was an essential step in our development and they continue to provide funds for the salaries of our computer instructors. Through Paolo and Guido, we had a contact, Paolo Perrini, who agreed to meet with us and discuss future plans. As we were leaving the encouraging meeting, Mr. Perrini took Julio aside and asked him if he would like to accompany him on Tuesday, when he was invited to a celebration at an encampment of gypsies that ARCI is assisting. He said that they would be painting a mural in honor of their patron Saint George, and he thought that Julio would make a great addition to the party.

Julio agreed, and was drawn into a very singular cultural experience, enjoying the immense warmth and generosity of these often maligned people. Every family roasted giant hunks of meat and offered up a feast of epic proportions. While the Roma kids did their mural, Julio painted two large figures on an adjacent wall, and he was truly inspired by the joyous atmosphere.  The continuing saga of ICBIE cooperation and friendship made another leap forward.

 Julio in Anguillara

ICBIE artist and ambassador Julio Costa arrived in Rome Saturday night, and early Sunday morning, he hopped a train up to the lovely town of Anguillara Sabazia, which is perched on a hill above Lake Bracciano.  He was met at the station by ICBIE founders Pietro Gallina and Roy Zimmerman, who whisked him off to the town’s new sport center, where the Anguillara Basketball Association was holding a national tournament, which, thanks to the great work by the association’s president, Oscar Reale, offered to give us a hearty dose of promotion.  The four day long tournament was in its final round, and the hall was packed with children and supporters when Oscar introduced Julio and illustrated the noble work of the ICBIE in Salvador.

Julio immediately set to work, painting a big panel that was placed outside the building, but visible to all the players and spectators.  He painted a lovely picture that portrayed a kangaroo, which is the mascot for the Anguillara team.  It was a gorgeous morning, and his work attracted a lot of attention.

He finished just in time, as we all had to rush back to the nearby town of Campagnano, to attend the annual Artichoke Festival.
