More Salvador Grafita Pictures

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

With the tour over, there are still many gaps that remain to be documented, but at least, thanks to a batch of photos that arrived this morning from the group’s photographer Paranaguá in Salvador, our readers can make their first impressions of the important stop in Barcelona.

Salvador Grafita Artists at AOSR

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Yesterday morning, when Pietro and the three Brazilians entered the school gates, it was like a homecoming. With its Bridge to Bahia project now in its second year, The American Overseas School has built a thick web of friendships with people from the ICBIE and the city of Salvador. Three AOSR teachers have worked at the ICBIE (and another, Louise Audette, will go this summer), two fresh graduates have done volunteer work (including one who is still there), an entire family spent their Christmas holidays there, and of course, I am both an AOSR music teacher and a co-founder of the ICBIE.

Yesterday’s appointment was both the last stop of the Salvador grafita European tour and the first day of Pietro’s seven week stay, save several trips in the interim. The two famous Bahian artists, Pinel and Lee 27, the photographer José Francisco Paranaguá Guimarães and Pietro spent four hours with us, while the painters did their work, with classes of students passing by to watch them in action. After months of seeing the beautiful murals painted by Julio and Bigode on the first grafita tour last October, our students are expert connoisseurs of Bahian street art. (Their work is still there on the wall, but in the spring we show our own student artworks, so they are temporarily covered.) Unfortunately, this time the weather, which cursed this entire two week long excursion through France, Germany, Spain and Italy, was again dreadfully rainy and raw, but spirits remained high, thanks to the steady stream of warm reunions. Daniele Dattilo and I hadn’t seen Pietro since leaving Ribeira last August, and while our prize student Gabriele was there less than four months ago, his mom drove across the city to come and have lunch with us.

Having the Brazilians face to face again brings the Bridge to Bahia mission to its highest goal, and the memories of their smiling faces will be a great boost for our spring fund raising campaign.

Pictures from Paris

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

With the team on the road following a hectic schedule, it’s difficult to get news about the tour of the Salvador graffiti artists, and only now have a few pictures (with no description of what they depict) from the first stop, Paris, arrived. Fortunately, it is easy to infer that we’re looking at a portrait of the whole group together with the Parisian writers, followed by some images of their work.

More complete news will be coming shortly!

The Bahians Hit Germany

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

News of the Salvador Grafita European tour is beginning to trickle in. The sojourn in Paris was packed full of exciting activities, including a visit to a prestigious private art school near the Bastille and a meeting with a group of writers from the banlieues. When pictures and more detailed news arrive, they will be posted here.

On Monday the group left Paris for Limburg, Germany, where they stayed until this morning, when they departed for Marseilles. Thanks to the staunch ICBIE supporter, Steve Whitton, photos and a vivid account of that visit have arrived. This is what Steve had to say about his visitors:

Following their great success in Paris (more news as soon as Pietro has an hour free), the ICBIE group had a long trip to Limburg that was a mixture of storms, wind and heavy rain - typical April weather in this part of Europe. They arrived on the Monday evening to a great meal, plenty of wine, beer and fruit juices, and plenty of humour as well. And, most important, 2 warm houses and 6 warm beds!

Limburg is a small, historical town between Köln and Frankfurt. It has a wonderful “Altstadt”, with houses nearly a thousand years old, and is cut in half by the River Lahn and its green, extremely pleasant valley. On Tuesday morning, the Mayor of Limburg, Herr Martin Richard, welcomed all six shivering visitors from Salvador with some German Sekt (Champagne) and presented Pietro with a book about the town, after which Edvando “Tucunaré” from the Prefeitura de Salvador presented the Mayor with a book about the Salvador Graffiti Project. The translator for the day, Herman de Bruin, then took the visitors up to the famous Limburg Cathedral, followed by some warmth and coffee in the equally famous Melonis, the best café this side of Switzerland.

The group then went to the Lahn Artists Art Centre, and took the chance to paint some quick pictures in acrylic with the help of Renate Kuby, the president of the 50-strong Lahn Artists group. But sprayers really just want to spray! When an old VW camping bus arrived, owned by one of the artist members who had given his permission to “do what they wanted” with it, the cans came out and with an interested and sometimes active audience, the bus gradually changed into an art object. It is great, and will stop the traffic wherever it goes this summer! 21 members on art courses also arrived, plus some local sprayers who mixed very happily despite not sharing a common spoken language - Michael Schuy (the main sponsor of Lahn Artists) provided some wonderful fillet steak, and the whole evening turned into a great party. Lahn Artists also has a new “graffiti” sign at the front (soon to feature on the Lahn Artists website), as well as a lot of new friends.

Wednesday started easily with a relaxed trip to Frankfurt, but the spray cans came out again later in Wiesbaden when the Limburg and Salvador sprayers met up once again, this time to paint some walls at the world famous Meetings of Style Schlachthof” site. This is an extraordinary place with some extraordinary artworks - some political, some historical, some just colourful designs - and even the rain did not dampen the enthusiasm. That feeling continued with the last event, an open meeting in the Irish Pub back in Limburg, but in this case, it was Guinness rather than rainwater….. The black stuff went down well, and as your correspondent listens to the contented sounds of sleep from the oh-so-tired ICBIE travelers, the feeling is that the trip to Germany was interesting, full of humour and memorable - many thanks to all in Salvador, Rome and Limburg who made it all possible!

A Powerful Book Launch at the ICBIE

Salvador Grafita Catalog Launch

On Tuesday, the ICBIE hosted a big event: the launch of a new book, a catalog of the Salvador Grafita Project, which coincided with the third anniversary of this high-profile cultural initiative, where the city of Salvador fosters, rather than represses, street artists. And considering the fact that tomorrow night six of the protagonists of the project will be departing for Paris on a second European tour, the timing couldn’t have been better for a big party.

Sponsored by the Municipal City Government, the beautiful new catalog traces the history of the innovative project, and is richly illustrated with examples of the vibrant native styles that have made Salvador famous as a leading center for street art. With an introduction by the Mayor, the catalog also features a deeply reflective article by Pietro Gallina, in both Portuguese and English (!), and the cover features a beautiful work by Bigode and Julio.

Although a last minute conflict prevented the mayor from attending, the city superintendent Edvando Luiz Castro Pinto (Tucunaré), who is responsible for Salvador grafita, was present, along with all the project’s artists, the photographer Paranaguá and numerous friends and journalists: a total of a hundred and twenty people. Music was provided by No de marinheiro and Lucas Carvalho, the protagonists all gave speeches, and the event ended with the usual refreshments and socializing.

Barcelona Flyer

The long-planned ICBIE invasion of Spain is rapidly approaching.  Our team in Barcelona is doing a fine job, with a big event scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, April 19th on the terrace of the Gothic Point (Calle Vigatans 5, just off Via Laietana and Calle de l’Argenteria, in one of the trendiest areas of the city).  The three Bahian artists will do their paintings while DJ Neto lays down some funky Brazilian grooves:  it promises to be exciting!  If you can’t make it to Barcelona, you can reconcile yourself with a full account here.

New Rooms for the Art Hostel

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

After months of stop and go, the new mini-apartments are finished and ready to accommodate our guests. An essential part of our mission, the hostel provides an opportunity for our visiting professors, social workers, volunteers and socially-responsible tourists to live in the cidade baixa, the heart of Salvador’s Afro-Brazilian culture, with all its problems and its wonders. The modest fees we that charge for our lodgings nonetheless provide a substantial share of our income, and with more rooms, we will be able to gradually expand our entire operation. Most importantly, the hostel creates a vibrant community of foreigners and locals, who can socialize and eat together in the large communal kitchen and dining room, or outside on the large patio surrounded by banana and mango trees. The hostel also has the advantage of being in an enclosed area, away from the noisy streets, where our guests can enjoy some relative peace and quiet. The new rooms, all with bathrooms, are located on the far back side of the ICBIE property, so our new buildings now cover three of the four sides of the garden. The fourth side will be developed as soon as we have saved enough money!
