CORSO DI DISEGNO II SEMESTRE 2010 CON IL SOSTEGNO DELLA AOS DI ROMA

Il II semestre del corso di disegno di osservazione conta un grande successo di iscritti. Il nostro valido insegnante Geisiel oltre a continuare le sue lezioni con i vecchi alunni – sempre piú talentuosi -  ogni sabato mattina insegna l´arte del disegno ad un´aula di circa 22 nuovi allievi.

Dare continuitá ad un corso che riscuote tanto successo presso la comunitá Itapagipana (e non solo) é stato possibile grazie anche al  sostegno econômico della American Overseas School of Rome (Italia) (www.aosr.org). La scuola con le sue donazioni e con l´invio di insegnanti volontari a Salvador, da anni sostiene l´ICBIE nella realizzazione delle sue diverse attivitá.

SECOND SEMESTER 2010 DRAWING COURSE, WITH THE SUPPORT OF AOSR

The second semester of the observational drawing class has enjoyed a boom in enrollment.  Our talented instructor Geisiel, besides continuing his lessons with his old students — who are showing more talent all the time — is also adding a course in the art of drawing on Saturday mornings, with a class of about 22 students.

To give continuity to a course that has enjoyed so much success with the community of the Itapagipe peninsula (and beyond) has been possible thanks to economic support from the American Overseas School of Rome (Italy) (www.aosr.org).  With its donations and the volunteer teachers that it has sent, for years the school has supported the ICBIE, helping us to realize many different activities.

After so many successes during the past seven years, it’s easy for us to assume that everybody knows all about the ICBIE and its work in Salvador, but, of course, that’s not true.  So, especially considering our ambitious plans for the future, it seemed appropriate to have an Introductory Video, to acquaint new people with the Institute.  Even for those who follow our work assiduously, this little clip should evoke plenty of good memories and reignite a passion for our noble mission.

Artista protesta contra derrubada de árvores

(English translation below)

Pintar de ouro os tocos de árvores. É desta forma que o artista plástico e cineasta Henrique Dantas, pretende chamar atenção da população para o seu projeto intervencionista “Toco de Midas”, protestando contra a derrubada de árvores centenárias em Salvador e outras capitais do país. Além disso, será afixada uma lápide de mármore na parte superior do toco com a seguinte mensagem: Aqui jaz uma Sucupira, ou Jequitibá, ou uma Arueira.

Está previsto também intervenções na Alemanha. Conforme explicou Dantas, a sua idéia é aproveitar a oportunidade da divulgação do filme de sua autoria em três cidades alemãs, para manifestar a sua preocupação com a derrubada de árvores. “Isso é uma forma de desmatamento. As sombras estão sumindo”, desabafa.

An Artist’s Protest Against the Destruction of Trees

Gold paint on tree trunks.  This is the way that the plastic artist and filmmaker Henrique Dantas hopes to attract people’s attention with his interventionist project called “The Midas Touch,” protesting against the destruction of hundred-year-old trees in Salvador and other major cities.  Beyond that, a marble marker will be placed on the top of the trunks, with the following message: Here lies a Sucupira, or a Jequitibá, or an Arueira:

He plans to take this approach to Germany.  As Dantas explains, his idea is to make the most of the opportunity, to promote the film he made in three German cities, always to demonstrate his outrage against the destruction of trees. “This is a kind of deforestation.  The shade is disappearing,” he exclaimed.

Che Guevara (Gael García Bernal) era um jovem estudante de Medicana que, em 1952, decide viajar pela América do Sul com seu amigo Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna). A viagem é realizada em uma moto, que acaba quebrando após 8 meses. Eles então passam a seguir viagem através de caronas e caminhadas, sempre conhecendo novos lugares. Porém, quando chegam a Machu Pichu, a dupla conhece uma colônia de leprosos e passam a questionar a validade do progresso econômico da região, que privilegia apenas uma pequena parte da população.

Venerdí scorso, 27 agosto, le nostre instancabili volontarie del Manhattanville College si sono recate - anche l´ultimo giorno -  all´ABEAC per svolgere le loro attivitá. Prima di recarvisi, peró, hanno confezionato pacchetti regalo per i bimbi dell´associazione: colori, matite, fogli per disegnare, prodotti di igiene personale, ecc.

Dopo un´intensa giornata di lavoro le abbiamo aspettate all´ICBIE con una abbondante dose di affetto e zuccheri!!!! Lu ha preparato due deliziose torte, una al cioccolato e una all´ananas. La madre di Marcella ha realizzato una crostata alla crema con frutta e Ivanildo ha contribuito alla dose di energia con deliziose banane fritte!

Quale migliore modo per salutarle e ringraziarle dello splendido lavoro svolto durante le loro tre settimane di permanenza a Ribeira?

Ancora grazie, ragazze e tornate presto, vi aspettiamo!!!!

LAST DAY AT THE ICBIE FOR TENISHA, TIZITA, JACLYN & AYLA

Last Friday, the 27th of August, our tireless volunteers from Manhattanville College went - even on the last day - to the ABEAC to carry on their work.  Before leaving, though, they prepared gift packages for the children of the association:  crayons, pencils, drawing paper, products for personal hygiene, etc.

After an intense day of work, we waited for them at the ICBIE with a big dose of affection and sugars!!!!  Lu prepared two delicious cakes, one with chocolate and the other with pineapple, while Marcella’s mother made a cream and fruit tart and Ivanildo contributed to the dose of energy with some delicious fried bananas!

What better way to salute them and thank them for the splendid work that they did during their three weeks in Ribeira?

Thanks again, girls, and come back soon.  We’re waiting for you!!!!

Volunteering in Salvador, Bahia was a rewarding way to spend our summer. Our four weeks were spent teaching English to students in high school as well as working with 3 NGOs: ICBIE, ABEAC, and Projecto Reciclavel. We also had the opportunity to immerse ourselves into Bahian culture and way of life. Some of the cultural programs included: visiting Pelourhino and Cachoeira, historical sights full of African drumming, music, and dance. We Also participated in programs coordinated by ICBIE such as: Capoeira, Hapkido, and Cinemaforum. ICBIE welcomed us with open arms and provided us with great hospitality. Their enthusiasm for us to not only enjoy our stay in Brazil but also their connection to the country and its people gave us the opportunity to fully submerse ourselves in Service-Learning and Education of Bahia. As our trip comes to an end we are sad to leave but very grateful for the experiences that we had here. We look forward to sharing our stories with family and friends. We can´t wait to see you again Bahia!

PAUSA TEMPORÁRIA DO CURSO DE INGLÊS

Ontem 26 de agosto, foi “finalizado” com muita alegria o curso de inglês monitorado pela professora americana Mary Overby, que viaja para a Europa e ficará ausente por algum tempo.

Entretanto, seus fies alunos continuarão vindo ao Instituto, todas as quintas-feiras de setembro, para assistirem a filmes em inglês, somente para não perderem o contato com a língua durante a sua ausência.

No ultimo dia de aula, foram feitos diversos jogos e brincadeiras com os alunos sobre os assuntos discutidos e debatidos durante as aulas.

Logo após os jogos, todos os alunos foram à sala do Hapkido, onde puderam conversar mais informalmente e degustar um delicioso bolo acompanhado de boa musica. Eram presentes além da família ICBIE e dos alunos do curso, a filha de Mary e as voluntarias americanas, Ayla, Jaclyn, Tenisha e Tisita do “Manhattanville College” de Nova York, que colaboraram com Mary nessas ultimas três semanas de curso.

Está previsto para o mês de outubro a chegada de uma professora americana, Miriam Murphy, que dará continuidade didática ao trabalho de Mary, por mais dois meses. Todos os alunos estão muito ansiosos para conhecê-la, e já estão aguardando o retorno de Mary.

A TEMPORARY BREAK FOR THE ENGLISH COURSE

On the 26th of August, the English class adjurned, due to the fact that our American professor Mary Overby is going to Europe and will be absent for quite awhile.

In the meantime, her faithful students will continue to frequent the Institute every Thursday during September, to view English language films, in order to keep the language fresh during her absence.

During the last day of class, we played some games and joked around with the concepts that we had discussed and debated in class.

After that fun, all the students went into the Hapkido room, where they could chat more informally, while tasting a delicious cake and listening to some good music.  We were joined by the whole ICBIE family and students, Mary’s daughter and the American volunteers, Ayla, Jaclyn, Tenisha and Tisita from “Manhattanville College” in New York, who had collaborated with Mary during these last three weeks of the course.

Starting in October, another American teacher, Miriam Murphy, will provide didactic continuity to Mary’s work, for two months.  All the students are really anxious to meet her, and they are also ready to patiently await Mary’s return.

The subject of her presentation will be The Sustainable Use of Natural Resources, and it will concentrate on the things we use every day, in order to focus our attention on the importance of natural resources in keeping the environment in equilibrium.  The objective is to instill a sense of necessity in the minds of the participants, to preserve the environment and its resources through recycling, sustainable use and re-utilization.

Her lecture will include lively interludes presented by the Little Theater Company of the ICBIE.

Palestra tem como tema:   O Uso Sustentável dos Recursos Naturais

Na palestra serão debatidos temas sobre a origem das coisas que estamos acostumados a usar no dia dia, para focar a atenção sobre os recursos naturais e a sua importância no equilíbrio do meio ambiente. O objetivo é de conscientizar os participantes da necessidade de preservar o meio ambiente e seus recursos através da reciclagem, do uso sustentavel, e do reaproveitamento.

Um pouco sobre o filme…

Em Montevidéu, Philip Michael Santore, um funcionário americano da entidade AID, é raptado por um grupo de guerrilha urbana de extrema-esquerda autodenominado Tupamaros. Mais duas autoridades são raptadas no mesmo dia, o cônsul Campos, do Brasil, e um outro, sendo que esse consegue escapar. Durante o interrogatório pelos captores encapuzados, Santore se diz um simples técnico mas é confrontado com evidências de que sua missão real é instruir políciais de vários países sul-americanos, ensinando métodos questionáveis tais como tortura, intimidação e assassinatos sem julgamento, o que levaria a formação de “Esquadrões da Morte”, acobertados pelas autoridades. Enquanto Santore é mantido cativo, os sequestradores negociam com o governo a troca dos reféns por prisioneiros políticos, causando uma grave crise institucional e a quase renúncia do presidente do país.

As mentioned earlier, ICBIE drawing instructor Geisiel Ramos was chosen to participate in a state-wide art exhibition, the Regional Salon of Visual Art of Bahia.  The show opened in Vitoria da Conquista on August 13th, and will run through September 26th, Monday through Saturday, from 8 AM to 9 PM at the Camillo de Jesus Lima Cultural Center.  The event is sponsored by the Cultural Foundation of the State of Bahia (FUNCEB), part of the famous SECULT.  Kudos to Geisiel!

Il 13 agosto scorso si é aperto a Vitoria da Conquista il Salone Regionale di arte visuale di Bahia al quale ha partecipato con una sua opera l´insegnante di disegno dell´ICBIE, Geisiel Ramos con una opera intitolata “Jogos de corpo”.

“No dia 13 de agosto, sexta-feira, às 19 horas, será aberta na cidade de Vitória da Conquista a terceira e última exposição da edição 2010 dos Salões Regionais de Artes Visuais da Bahia. Com 28 obras de diversos estilos e temáticas, a mostra fica em cartaz no Centro de Cultura Camillo de Jesus Lima, com entrada gratuita, até 26 de setembro, de segunda a sexta-feira, das 8 às 21 horas. Resultado de edital da Fundação Cultural do Estado da Bahia – FUNCEB, unidade da Secretaria de Cultura do Estado – SecultBA, os Salões são uma ação de difusão e incentivo à produção em artes visuais no Estado por possibilitarem a divulgação de trabalhos, a circulação de artistas e a formação de público.
“Os Salões contribuem, anualmente, para a revelação de novos talentos, o reconhecimento de artistas experientes, o intercâmbio na área e a pesquisa de novas estéticas. A montagem das exposições em cidades do interior ainda possibilita a descentralização dos espaços de visibilidade das artes, ampliando o acesso e as opções para público, artistas e produtores culturais”, resume Gisele Nussbaumer, diretora da FUNCEB.
